Default Probably a real stupid question but...

I've heard of people advancing their timing above stock reccomended specs, but why do they do this? what benefits are there? Right now the only mods i have are Intake, headers, exaust on my D16y8. I just want to know if i am missing out on anything and hoping to gain some knowlege on what advancing the timing actually does to the engine. THANKS
