Default 4.7 FD and long drives

I have a 4.7 fd in my itr trans. My tires are 205/15/50. Driving at 80mph, I'm just about at 4600 rpm. I have only driven my car within the bay area. Longest drive probably is the track (75 miles away).

My question is: Has anyone (with 4.7fd and 205/50/15's) driven their car long distance? I would like to drive my car to San Diego, but I do not want to be driving 60mph for almost 500 miles. Any overheating issues, etc.? I usually drive to San Diego at 85-90mph in my other car, but in the r, that would be at almost 5000rpm.

4.9 FD. Drove from South Florida to Michigan for Expo 02 about 5k round trip including detours. Then drove about the same distance to PA for Expo 03. Many trips to Atlanta and NC. No problem at all, just keep it out of vtec to save gas, which for me is right around 95mph.

I've also average over 110mph going to NC one night and had no over heating problems at all. However, I got around 18 mile per gallon

1. You get great gas mileage in the 4-5K RPM range, as long as you aren't set to be in vtec somewhere in the range (like those with the mugen ecu).

2. The car is in no way under 'extreme pressure' while cruising on the highway for hours on end.

I would not be concerned with the rpms you are turning. Those who get longer 4th and 5th gears to lower their rpm's on the highway are, IMO, ludicrous. Anyone who actually thinks there is much (if any) difference between 4600 and 4000 rpms on the highway (as far as strain on the engine), is loony.

On the trip to the expo, it was mid 80's, humid, the car was packed down with 300lbs + of equipment/tires/jack stands/tools/jack, etc and my temp gauge never budged past just under half, nor did i expect it to.

I don't see any issues with driving 80-90 on the highway for a long time. 4-5K is pretty normal for these engines. Just drive, make sure your oil levels and coolant are ok, nothing bad will happen.

I've got no clue on 4.7FD.

But, I can tell you that crusing at 5,000+ rpm for a long period of time is complete fine with the R motor.

I've drove eight hours straight to Ft. Lauderdale, FL doing a hair over triple digits. Also, done the same to MD (9 hours straight). The only stops were for gas refill.

As long as your FD is installed correctly, you shouldn't have any problems. Oh, 205/50/15 has a bit shorter sidewall, so your speed will read faster than it really is.

I have the stock 4.4 and when I take long trips my tach is usually in the high range (over 5k) for hours at a stretch sometimes for entire tank full.

I have never seen my Temp move not once- even on the track.

But after a long fast drive I change the fluids.

Longest I've traveled on the ATS was about 5 hours. Average highway speed was about 80, and there was no sign of any engine problems. Our motors are made to handle RPM's, and ~5000 is nowhere near high in terms of RPMs when compared to what they CAN handle.

Do check your fluids before you leave. Make sure you have sufficient oil and coolant and you will be good to go

I've gone from San Diego to LA every weekend this month with 4.78 final and Azenis 205-50-15's, no problems, and my fan wasn't working either

that sounds so strange people.

People with US ITR's or 96 spec ITR's with 4.7 FD should be around 5k rpm at 80mph in 5th because of the shorter gearing in 4th and 5th compared to a 98 spec tranny.

I'm at exactly 5000 rpms (actually 4950 +\- with my datalogger) at 80mph with the ATS FD in my '96 spec JDM ITR tranny.
