Importing TYPE R's????
ok guys, here's my problem, I have a friend in the airforce and is located in JAPAN right now. I've been talking to him and of course about the R's. He told me that honda integra's are very common and are daily driven vehicles you see everyday. I asked him how much does one run for and told me that is ranges from $4000+ depending on condition so forth. The plan is that I send him money and he buys a car over there and ship it here. But who do I ask first? I don't plan on driving the R but only to strip it down and convert it to my GSR. ( engine, seats, steering wheel, suspension, so forth and dump the car at a junk yard or so)
But who do I go to import a car legally into US? how much is shipping a car from japan to NC? What first step should I do? How long does it take? Why do alot of salvage places carry front clips only and not the whole car? HELP, HELP, HELP.......Im new to this SHIPPING, its not like UPS or USPS. im ready to get my R, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the Marines and know lots of guys that have shipped cars home. He should be able to have his chain of command ship it home pretty easily. As far as selling it back to you or how ever you decide to do things... I don't imagine it would be a problem because you don't intend to get the car licensed.
im not planning to register the vehicle to make it legal or any, just want the car in my door step so i can strip it away. But thanks for you reply, I'll ask him to see
For around 4 grand you are looking at a 96 spec R. It is Possible to Ship it over But I would recommend to ship it SALVAGE parts. Meaning there is More hassel to get a FULL Car into the US than would be for "CAR PARTS"
Not saying that it can't be done but for what you are Looking for or for what you have planned the latter would be my suggestion.
There are EXporters in Japan that specialize in shipping Used cars overseas perhaps if you want to go that route then you should contact or have your friend Contact the Exporter. Now getting it registered is your burden.
What part of Japan is your Friend Located?
Look at this Link Might be helpful
Also This one might be good if you want to dismantel the car.
If the Links don't work Goto http://www.cablenet.ne.jp/~alient/ or http://www.papera.com

It is my understanding that customs will HOLD your car for as long as they see necessary. I've heard of cars being held in customs for over 6 months before clearing.
Shipping parts will be much more cost-effective, and will take far less time.

just ask him to ship it through the military as a parts car. then just take it from him if you plan on parting it out. you could sell the body when your done so don't throw it away.
i heard u can do this to a car that has been improted i odnt know if it works though i only heard about it the way u can register it is that take the vin off of a old integra and put it on the type r jdm. that way u can register it but if the ask u why r u driving on the right hand side jsut say i converted it to jdm specs. thats the only thing i have ever heard of trying to register a jdm car has anyone else heard of that too?

Can you SAY ILLEGAL???
That is not the only way to register a Japanese car in the US.
If you are so intrested why not pick up the phone and Call the places on the Links above. Do this instead of speculating How hard it is or why you can't of do this Illegally etc etc. I provided the Links with Website and Pone Numbers. CALL they speak English.

my company ships these cars for the military (MTMC).
shipping is free
but you need a letter from your CO, a letter from the lein holder (if any), military ID, and current registration of the car.
your last item will be tough to get i'd imagine.

I brought one over. It was in customs for like two months. I had to register it out of state(Utah) because California is a bitch and then I registered it here. It takes a while though and I am starting to think that it wasn't worth it. I sold it and made some money and bought the ITR that I have now. It will be way easier because you are not in California and because you don't want to register it.
