OT: Best way to report a hit and run (when you're an observer on the road)??
First of all, a hit-and-run didn't happen to me.
Here's a long story short:
1. Freeway gets clogged a bit, cars start to slow down.
2. On the passing lane (left most lane) cars are slowing down as well.
3. Idiot on a S10 comes in too hot into a car that is braking normally.
4. S10 almost locks up his brakes, but in the end he rear-ends a Volvo 740 wagon.
5. The hit is very noticeable and the volvo gets hit in the back and it squats forward.
6. Long story short, the S10 driver doesn't pull over even when the Volvo driver points to the emergency lane.
7. S10 driver takes off like a bank robber and Volvo tries to chase it down. The pursuit lasts for at leas 3-4 miles.
8. I didn't pursue either of them, so I don't know what the end result is.
Now, given the scenario, I really want to help out the Volvo driver. He's been wronged by the S10 driver who hit-and-run. (or, tried to from what I've seen.)
I have tried to dial *77 to get the highway patrol, but the fawking line was busy (what a surprise.
).
I have both their license plate numbers and car description. I can also recall the scene exactly as it happened.
What can I do in the situation? I would hate to think that something like the above scenario happens to me and no-one is there to help out.
TIA.
-Sean

hit and run is a very serious crime.
i could call it in and see if the Volvo (
) owner has reported the event to the police.

if you got the plates of both cars, you can do a few things. like will said, call The Man and see if the volvo guy reported it. If that falls through, the volvo driver might have given up. you can (i think) try to contact the volvo driver using his plate number, through the DMV or something, get in touch with them, tell them you saw the whole thing and have the *******'s plates, then they might file a report if they still can. just a thought
rob- who hates hit n runs

Although the Highway Patrol has jurisdiction over any accident/crime that happens on the Interstate, you can also report it to the police department local to the area in which the incident took place.
I would try reporting it to whomever would listen. Hopefully the driver of the Volvo reported it as well, so when you call in the authorities may know what you're talking about.
for doing the right thing.

if the volvo driver didn't report it, there really isn't much you can do...but you can contact the highway patrol to find out...that's your best bet

in this case, call up the highway patrol &/or local cops and report what you saw.

Listen to the real officer. Jason is right. If the volvo owner doesn't care enough to report it, neither should you.

I can garuntee you the volvo owner made a report. **** wouldn't you. Anyhow find out where report was filed and then contact them and ask how you can help. I'm guessing that the volvo driver got the plates, but if not you might be thier only hope. I suspend people's driver license's for no insurance so i work alot with dps, dmv ect.... These plate #'s will also be helpful to the insurance co, because they will end up suing or filing a judgment on s10 owner. Also if he didnt have insurance his license can be suspended depnding on damages and what state your in. What state did this take place in?
**** sucks...
hope you got a license plate number, and hope the volvo owner gets compensated for his losses.
i hate people who drive w/o responsibility. it's just stupid. if u get into an accident, let the insurance companies sort it out...

Depends where you are. Some localities instruct you to call 911 to report accidents.

Thanks to everyone for the tip. I'll head down to the local police office and give 'em all the info I have. I hope the Volvo driver reported the incident and hope my info could help him out.
I suspect that the S10 driver probably didn't have an insurance/or suspended license and that's why he didn't stop.
I'll let you know if I find out more about the incident or the process.

Unless the Volvo driver is on the lam, he reported it. No one is going to want to drive around with a screwed up car, so even if he only reported to his insurance, they'd make him file a police report.

I would just do the right thing. If the volvo owner didn't report anything, then you still did everything that you could, there isn't a downside to that. You are making the most out of the situation that you have, that is all that you can do and that is the right thing.
I would call the highway patrol directly in a case like that. *HP from a cell phone gets you the NCSHP. I've seen the full list of "shortcuts" for each state on the net somewhere.
