33 lb-ft for the drain plug on the engine oil pan???

I started going after it with my torque wrench trying to get there, but gave up and called it good. A damn drain plug doesn't need 33 lb-ft...does it?

I always just hand tighten mine. So it must be like 10ft-lbs.

Its not that hard to get 33lb, either way I just tighten it till I hear the washer crush.

I use a torque wrench to tighten every drain plug i touch (seriously). I've worked on way too many cars that have drain plugs overtightened, normally people will just wrench on it because they think its not tight enough for some reason..

SlicedBread, how high do you usuallly tighten it? I would think 33 lb-ft would be too much for any drain plug.

I don't have a washer on it...washers go crunch?

I think 10 or so would be a better torque.

I always tighten mine to the specs on the Helms. (33 lb-ft)
You need to buy the crush washer that Honda sells with the bolt to get a good seal. 33 is not that tight if you ask me.

Well, considering the oil pan is made of sheet metal, 33 ft/lb is pretty heavy. IMO. I always put it on finger tight, and then take a ratchet and tighten it up just a little more, but that will vary from person to person with how tight they think it should be.

exactly what I do...tighten with hand, slightly with a wratchet. I haven't had a problem!

guys, honda has a spec for a reason....use it!

and you should be running a crush washer. if you aren't, then that could be why you think 33 ft-lbs is too tight...

i have never used a torque wrench for the drain bolt. i use hand tight then little wratchet to make sure it stays. as long as your not using an impact to put it back on it should be perfectly fine.

Thanks for the discussion, guys. I will get some washers for the next oil change, and I might try 33 lb-ft again, but I bet I'll end up just hand tightening it.

Thanks again, happy oil changing!

every filter you buy from honda comes with a new washer its taped to the plastic shrink wrap on the filter this way you get a new seal on the drain plug every time. you may pay a little more for the filter but its worth it in my opinion

Default If you learned from this topic, then it is for you too!

I don't think Honda oil filters are that great. My memory says they are the same as Fram filters which aren't great either. http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw....html There is something that shows different filters, inside and out. Honda is not pictured, though.
I think next time I end up at the honda dealer, I'll pick up some of the washers.

is there some historical failure due to not tightening the drain bolt to 33 ft/lb that we should know about? I'll try my best to tighten it to 33 ft/lb with a washer next time.

Thanks

33 ft. lbs, as long as you use a new washer/plug every time....thats what properly crushes the washer. Tighter than that youll stretch the pan. Keep in mind that 33 ft. lbs. is for a pan still fairly new with good threads.
