Can I mount the EGT here?
I just bought an autometer EGT for my '99 si. I was going to weld in the bung on the 3rd runner on the header but there's a little problem. I have a DC 4-1 header and there is a "DC Sports" logo plate welded on the spot where I'll be putting the bung. I had heard a suggestion that I could mount it on the underside of the header but wanted to see if anyone has done this/had this same problem. I wanted to make sure the probe was 1"-2" from the block for accuracy.
My 1999 si Mod.'s include: AEM cai, ITR cams, IM, and valvetrain, Skunk2 gears, Landspeed race cat., GREDDY EVo exhaust, DC 4-1, Hondata s200 w/ 3 step. I'll be going to the dyno on Monday to get it tuned. Redline will be raised to 8,500; fuel cut off at 8,600. Sorry I forgot to include that information........

hahha I like that one.
well this is what i know. Theres a crap load of info in search. I know it's sorta messy in there and you have to read like 50 threads but you'll find the answer.
Since your going all motor there isn't a real big reason why you need a EGT temp honestly. It would be better to get a oil pressure gauge. But since you already have it I'll try to help you out.
You should mount it on runner#3, about 2-4inches off the head. you can use a fitting at any local hardware store. Just drill and tap. you can use jbweld to seal if if you over bore that hole
Some people say that if your not turbo and want a EGT you can just mount it sidways were the header merge collector is..... (thats how I would do it for NA applications)

Thanks for the help guys. I was told by my Hondata tuner that it's a very usweful tool when tuning. Thata why I got it. Besides, It'sobibly good to know when your engine is running a little too hot. Thanks for the info.

Yeah true but only to a certain point. What I think they may have told you was a widband o2 sensor possibley?

There is a big reason...I'm running EGT temps that are so high I'm burning off my coating that's rated at 1,400F...per the coater I'm running higher than most boosted folks, and when lean burning during cruising I have some very high temps. Now I just need to get the EGT to see what the temps really are.

You want to place the EGT probe 1" from the head in the #3 cylinder, anywhere else and you'll get a number that's been scewed. Farther down the piping will give you an inaccurate reading since the gases have had time to cool down, and moving to another cylinder will give you a lower temperature reading since the #3 cylinder it the hottest of all of the cylinders due to the firing order, and the coolant passage(coming in by cylinder 1, and exiting between cylinder 3 and 4).
Most EGT kits simply require that you tap the hole, then insert the probe that is held on by a clamp, you can take a look at the instructions on http://www.autometer.com The nicer kits require that you weld in a threaded bung for the EGT to screw into.

Austin thanks for the info. The only problem was I already welded the bung 1 3/4" away from the head on the 3rd runner. Is this going to be o.k.? I hope so.
J2turbo21, I wish you could have found that info. for me I'd like to read it. Sorry I didn't get back to you guys sooner I was in that POWER OUTAGE EMERGENCY here in NY and all of the electricity got blown out! It suched ***. Anyway I would like to know how to use the EGT properly as a tool. If you can help me out I'd appreciate it.

Yep, that will work fine, much farther and I would recommend that you realize that the numbers wil be a little lower than they should be.

Sorry man i can't find it and i even searched for like an hour.I read it and from what i remember your supposed to do this. You dont tune according to a certain temperature. You get the car tuned and when its running good with a good a/f you check the EGT.lets say its reads 850F partial with 14.7 a/f and 1400F wot with 12.5a/f.Well when your trying to do some street tuning you use the EGT temperatures you got when you dynoed to get them close to a good a/f.Say its at 1600F wot well you add fuel until its around 1400f wot and then you know the a/f is good.Sorry if im completely wrong its just what i remember reading like 4months ago
Thanks for the help guys. I'm gad 1 3/4" is going to be o.k. I also know that I can tune the car to a certain extent myself by using the EGT gauge.
