Default Mileage on Mobile 1 Synthetic?

How many of U guys run Mobile 1 Syn., & how often do yo change it? . A friend of mine is trying to find an article in I think Motor Trend or Road & Track. I think it said something about BMW & Merc. doing a test on syn. oil saying it could last as much as 12.5k mi before it started losing it's viscocity. I change mine every 3k, but I've never heard concrete word on how long you can go on syn. oil. Normaly I wouldn't listen to things like but, when a car co. like Merc. or BMW is making a claim like this it got my att.

I change my oil every 3,000 miles with Mobile 1 5w-30, but from what i hear the oil can go much longer. I would have no problem letting it go to 5,000 miles, but either way i think the filter should be changed at 3,000 so i change the oil along with it.

Manufacturers have been increasing the amount of time between oil changes recently. I use Mobil 1 and change it every 3-4 k along with the filter. But it is true that it can last that long. With the emphasis on can.

I run synthetic for 7,000 - 7,500 miles before I change it. Changing at 3,000 is a total waste of money. If you change at 3,000, you might as well get the regular dino oil.
After running 6,000 miles on dino oil, the oil starts looking bad from then on.

I talked to Erick from Ericks racing and he uses Motul on his own car. He says he changes the oil every 2500 miles.

lexus told me you can do the first oil change at 10,500 miles. which is ******* bullshit.
i'd change my oil every 3000-4000 reguardless of the brand of oil, syntec or conventional.
i say synthetic is not worth it for the money. i use conventional oil and change it every 3-4K.

I just started using Amsoil 100% Synthetic and you change the oil every 25k miles. You only change the filter at 12k miles or 6 mos. using their filters or a high quality one like a Mobil 1 filter, like my friend uses. Of course if you race the engine they do recommend changing it a bit sooner, like anyone else would. So far so good and I really did feel a difference. It just feels smoother than the Mobil 1 (that I previously used since 1999).

Anyone else use this stuff? Most everything I've researched seems to say Amsoil is one of the top, if not the top, synthetic out there.

Check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and read the UOA's on the different oils. From what I've seen on that site, Mobil 1, Redline, and Amsoil are all great oils and are probably the top three...the top one being Redline...

Mobil 1 is the biggest bang for your buck, and it's an outstanding oil...but some people complain of it burning off....

Redline is laced with moly, an anti metal to metal contact lubricant. Amsoil is full of zinc...another anti mteal to metal contact lubricant. Mobil 1 has a combination of moly and zinc from what I understand.

My friend uses Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w30 and after 1000miles it was 1/2 qt. low. Its not leaking and compression test was fine.

Did I read this right? 25k miles? I don't even think big diesel rigs go that long on the same oil.. That sounds absurd. Change it every 3 to 4k.

I agree.

25,000 miles sounds absurd.

From the oil samples I've done, my mobil1 loses viscocity by 3000.
I think one of my 5W30 samples had broken down to 5W20.

I dont know about you, but I think running a 20 weight at 8,400rpm in a .93G turn is dumb. Change your oil every 3,000....

From what I've seen, Amsoil is about equal to mobil1. Both are vastly better than redline which seems to cause 2-3times more engine wear than mobil1.

I used Mobile 1 Fully Sync before, but it burn off very quickly. After 500km and a track day, the oil is already before the required level!!

I have since switch to Speed Master and is doing fine.

I dont burn much. At my last HPDE, I checked the level after the first day and I only burned 1/2 a quart after 98miles of racing.
My guess is some people didn't leave the break-in oil in for long enough to get the rings sealed well when the car was new, or beat on it before the engine was broken in.

yup... and I accept that fact in exchange for better temp. / wear protection.

The oil compsumption with my car varies from track to track and from visit to vist (to the same track)... it also changes with the tune of the car. Since I have tuned the car the last time the car burns less (tuned to be less rich).

I flush (on average) the engine oil every ~3000-3100 miles.

I have a oil report already (~25,000 miles)... I have another sample from ~50,000 ready to send to the lab.

The first report:

How much track time is on this sample? Your iron, chromium, lead, and AL seem about double what they should be normally.

I'd tried Mobile Synthetic 10-30, and to be very honest, IT SUCKS
It just burned all my F*&^king oil. Even I changed every 2000 miles !! If don't want to pay much, just try Castrol Synthetic, price is reasonable with good performance.

Mobil 1 5W-30 has been in my car since its first oil change and I normally burn about 1/2 a quart between 3k mile changes. During the weekend HPDE at VIR North recently I burned almost half a quart all weekend. Needless to say I was happy, but would just add more if needed anyway.

The reason why MB and some other manufactures say you can go the long time between the oil changes is that they hold Alot More oil then 4.5, they sometimes hold up to 8 qts or more.
