tranny rebuild time on 90 CRX. What to replace?
(Moved from Tech forum to EF forum)
Took the tranny out of my 90 CRX DX tonight. Symptoms were: popping out of 2nd and 5th when letting off the throttle. Also, It had a "whirring" or "roaring" sound from the tranny when in idle. Push the clutch in, and a few seconds later it goes away.
I did a lot of H-T searching and reading in the last week, and concluded that the popping out of gear might be caused by (1)low fluid level or (2) bad mainshaft &/or countershaft bearings causing shaft wobble. I was hoping #1, but the abnormal sound made me think it's definitely the bearing(s). Checked the level, I couldn't feel any at all with my finger. Drained out a little over a quart, then filled it with 2qts of fresh 10W40 for a quick fix(wishful thinking). No luck.
As soon as I got the tranny out tonight, I could feel major input shaft (mainshaft) wobble. Culprit identified!
Plan on cracking it open tomorrow, but I've never opened one before. My question is: If all the other bearings seem fine, can I get by with just replacing the input shaft bearing and seal? That would be about $30 and I'd be back on the road. It has never had a gear-shifting grind, so the syncros should be good, but i'll inspect them anyway. How much is a complete rebuild kit, and where is the best place to get one?

Bad news. took the tranny apart today and the input shaft bearing is so far gone that only a few scarred ball bearings were left, and I can't tell where the bearing stops and the seal starts. Looks like the damage affected the mainshaft and the casing that the bearing was pressed into.
Cliff's Notes: Not worth rebuilding,
But I do have an 88 Si tranny. It grinds 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
Can I put the synchros from the 90 DX tranny into the 88 Si one?
