Default 2.5 Inch Exhaust? What do I do??

Alright, so now I find out that using a JDM 4-1 header, and test pipe I guess I have to go to a 2.5 inch exhaust.

What do I get guys? I just want decent performance. I will probably Jet-Hot coat the thing.

So any suggestions? Don't want something super pricey, just something to give me decent performance.

Do I need a new muffler? If so I want something relatively close to stock in terms of noise, and I want to somewhat mantain some back pressure.

Thanks

Dave at SMSP can send you a kit based on my 2.5" set-up. You can have any local muffler shop weld the pieces for you. I have the 14" resonator(I think) and a 16" or 18" is offered. Probably worth it if you want to keep noise down more. I believe the kit price was approx $360. Email him at smsproducts@carolina.rr.com for more details and specifics.

I am working with Dave right now to get his SS exhaust system for my GSR sedan. Judging from what RStoR and others have said, this exhaust seems to be a great setup -- 2.5" diameter tubing, mandrel bends, stainless steel material, at about half the cost of brand name SS systems, etc. How can this be a bad thing, especially hooked up with a JDM 4-1 header and Carsound cat. Chris, I assume you're still pleased with yours?

Why do you want back pressure?

OOOOH!

OK, I just need to get this marriage thing out of the way. For XMAS or my BDay I'm going with a kickass header with 2.5 inch collector (hopefully SMS) and good cat with this 2.5 inch full exhaust.

I have a sedan too, so please save your specs for me, ok?

I'm really looking forward to it, since my car rocks pretty good now, but it's really getting choked by my Neuspeed 4-2-1 header

Dave, just curious, how much do you think your header with a good cat (carsound) and 2.5 inch exhaust would help me out? I know, too general. My cat is RT and my current exhaust is a Greddy BL, but I wouldn't be surprised if I gained 10 HP at the wheels...

Take care,

It's funny how Dave hardly ever posts here, and you think he's basically dropped off the face of H-T, and then he comes in and posts right when you need it.

If I may ask a dumb question...what could one expect if one were to slap the SMS exhaust on a stock R? I know RstoR has it but if I remember correctly his car is not stock.

If I order an exhaust from you how long before you could ship it?

Neo~

I'm still extremely pleased with my system. I have noticed the system has opened up a little since we installed it. Kind of typical for an exhaust! As I suggested to onyx, a little bit larger resonator would probably aleviate that. Definitely worth the money.

Ross~

You are correc, I have Spec B's.

I could probably get it out by next Friday the 17th on Monday the 20th, since I'm already doing 2 next week. As you know I'm moving to VA and the move starts today! I'll probably stop taking exhaust and cat orders on the 17th and resume after the shop is moved in about 2 weeks. I'll continue to take header orders as there is about a 2-3 month wait at this time.

I just use the Kakimoto R setup which is quiet and 70mm. THat's about 2.7 inches or so.

I found this on ebay. Has anyone tried getting a custoom B pipe with 2.5 ID and this Mugen style muffler..... It supposedly 2.5 but im not sure if that is ID or OD.

Tubing is specified as OD. For example 2-1/2" OD tubing in 16g has a wall thickness of .065", so the ID is 2.500"-(.065")*2 or 2.370". I believe if you look on the King web site you will find the exhaust is 60mm and I've read the muffler drops down to 2-1/4" but I haven't verified that since I've never seen one in person.

The USDM Mugen twin loop probably does drop down to 2-1/4" or less because it is modified to bolt up to the US cat. The JDM Mugen appears to be 60mm all the way through. No, I didn't crack open the muffler to verify this, but I doubt anyone else has either. I don't see any reason for them to reduce the size. There are no bottlenecks in the b-pipe, why would they suddenly add one inside the muffler?!

Not sure on the JDM Mugen but I believe the USDM one goes down to an actual 2 inches by the cat all the way to the resonator! Defcon1/Shane can shed a little more detail on this.
