Default temperature level isn't normal......help please

gf 99 civic ex with stock everything, about 46k on the d16

normally when i drive the car, the temperature needle is at like below the temp icon.

but recently, i noticed the temperature needle is like flat when i look at it, like <---
covering the lower part of the temperature icon........

yesterday i checked on the coolent and when i pop open the cap, coolent looks full to me, and the reserve was at low, so i added it up to the max level.

ok, so today my gf told me, when she starts up the car and 2 minutes later, the temperature is the same.........

i couldn't figure out what is wrong, haven't change water pump or flush coolent yet.

That sounds about right; that's where mine is. And I heard on a local morning news show from their resident car "expert" that a lot of newer cars (6G Civic probably included) don't have "functioning" temp gauges. They're programmed so that they all go to the same spot, thus preventing owners from saying, "Well, his temp gauges is lower than mine! What's wrong with my car?" It only really moves when something's wrong (overheating). But where the temp gauge is at now seems fine.
