Default AEM Pulleys

Hey, i could buy the AEM set of pulleys for a possible 75-100 dollars off a friend i know. I'm just wondering before/if i get them, What's the pros and cons with pulleys. I've heard this and that, but just wondering if its worth getting. I especially want to know whats bad about them though. I dont need my alternator cracking short on me, for so I heard. Also, are they easy to install. I'm willing to do them myself but just wonderin if I should take it to a pro to save me the whole cusing and all that crazy stuff of stress. Thanks.

Search "pulley" or "pulleys"

I heard that with the AEM ones that sometimes the belt slips.

There's hardly any disadvantages to installing accessory pulleys, as long as it doesn't include the crank pulley. They will not affect your driveability, comfort, noise or etc.

Some people say that it makes the steering stiffer, or the alternator will not charge enough. Unless you got a big sound system, I think it's BS. I've never experienced such a thing.

And for Kattiflis, who says he heard some times belts slip on AEM pulleys, well, it's like any sort of pulley, if the belt is not binded right, it's gonna slip. Of course, when you install new belts, next oil change, you should always bind your belts a little more, because they acquire just a little more flexibility, and they might begin to slip a litlle, but that is just normal, it's the belt settling in.

As for the installation, they may be a bitch to install. Usually, you got at least one of the two accessory pulleys that has a reverse thread, so you want to be aware of that. Also, on my 5th gen, I had to slightly cut into my my engine support bracket to give it enough clearance for the PS belt to pass, since the AEM pulleys are slightly more offset than stock pulleys.

But if you have a crank npulley in your set, it's a whole different story.

i love th p/s pulley, the slightly stiffer feeling is actually better for performance driving.

i hate the alt/ pulley, slow power windows, dimming lights, and my car died a few times in stopped traffic with my accessories on.

It may be another problem that is accentuated by the pulleys, like bad grounds, or an alternator not working at optimum capacity. Sometimes, when the car is too much at idle with many accessories on, an old alternator will not charge sufficiently enough, and it will eventually weaken the battery, etc, etc.

Hey thanks for the info. I think i might just get them. I dont have a big *** stereo and personally dont need it. (id rather be lsitening to the sound of my car) So i dont really have to worry about the alternator really not pulling enough energy. And from other posts. i wont mind the power steering pump. Hopefully it will give a more rack and pinion feel. More feel for the road. And well i guess I might try putting the belts on but if it gets iffy. A professional will be assisting quickly.

But also one last question. Has anyone noticed a performance addition to it? and roughly how much. Better torque, better horseper? ya know that kinda deal. Thanks alot guys.

well i often thought of getting new pulleys. AEM to be exact. but i read into pulleys and like you said, the power shortage and steering and what not doesnt bother me. But your car wont "gain" hp, the pulleys just release some extra 3-5 hp from your car. And yeah you will probably feel a better take off maybe? But i dunno yet, i may still do it.

2-3hp regained from parastic losses, nothing too big of a deal. I wouldn't pay the $160 or whatever, but $70ish ya....I got some for $60 ...brand new actually, from a guy I knew who was going to install them but sold his car.
