d16a6 (88-91 si)= sohc non vtec
d16z6 (92-95 ex, si) sohc vtec
EDIT: hard to say which one is better, when my 1.5 mpfi 89 hatch was still running i ran my buddy that has a 95 civic ex coupe with a z6 and ate him alive, so who honestly knows.

i personally like the D16A6 but its hard to find one with low miles...so since the D16Z6 doesn't have that much miles pick that up instead...

I know, but I'd rather give Honda's own facts rather than speculation

Who needs a fawkin vtec!
Seriously, my a6 pull mad strong the entire RPM band.. Now I have a Stage 1 crane cam, Integra LS TB, and Y8 intake manifold.. It really woke up the engine.

I think the design of the main caps are different with the Z6 compared the A6. It might be aluminum, but it's still stronger due to the different design. Honda designated the redline of the A6 @ 6500 for a reason, while the Z6 redlines @ 7200 rpm. I'm trusting Honda that the Z6 in fact has a stronger bottom end than the A6. Remove the oil pan on both motors and compare to see what I'm talking about.
Also: The Z6 oil pump puts out more pressure than the A6. (which is something to keep in mind if you need to replace one)

I think its only worth it to run a D16z6 if you convert your Civic/CRX to run OBD1 electronics and the D16z6's very own P28 Ecu and distributor.
Just bolting the D16z6 up to the cable tranny, using the OBD0 PM6 ecu, and modifying the stock OBD0 dizzy to work with the D16z6 head and using a RPM switch or shift light to activate VTEC will not get you the full HP that motor was designed for.
To me, that approach is not worth it. Now, with OBD0 to OBD1 conversion harnesses readily available, why not convert to OBD1? On one of my very own CRX's that I drive, I had to re-pin the ENTIRE ecu harness for OBD1! I am running a OBD1 P61 socketed for the HONDATA S200.
Its so much easier with a conversion harness! If you are local to MN, I have these in stock. If not, check out Jason (90BlownHatch on Honda-tech)
Trust me, if you decide to run a D16z6 engine, it will run alot better with the ECU and electronics it was intended for. I've seen many Civic/CRX swaps with newer engines running older electronics with ghetto rigged wiring and switches to activate VTEC running horrible times at the track.
People have to realize that an ECU meant for that engine does way much more than someone running a stock ECU and using some sort of switch just to activate VTEC.

I'm pretty interested in hearing more about the maincaps, A6 vs Z6... Is the better structural design REALLY that much better on the Z6 that it can makeup for being alum. vs steel !!! Better be one badass design... Not saying anyone is wrong or right, just being curous..
