I am local..OC too. There are several directions you can take but it all depends on what your goals are. However first thing is to get you on the track and see if you even like it. Then you can get more involved and see which direction is best to take.
Try:

http://www.nasaproracing.com
http://www.touringcarclub.com
There are others but these all schedule events in Southern California.

You could go to a school and pay a couple thousand to learn very quickly, but you might want to start by doing driving events (High Performance Driving Events), which are not really racing but learning to drive. NASA Socal has pretty thorough HPDE instruction, you can check their site for what an HPDE is: http://www.nasaproracing.com
Other folks that put on really good HPDE are
http://www.speedventures.net
If your first time on a track they require you pay an extra $20 or 30 for an instructor.
Also check http://www.speedtrialusa.com
and http://www.redlinetrackevents.com
These are all in SoCal and they put on events at both Willow Springs tracks and Buttonwillow besides other tracks. So, to get started, sign up for a HPDE and go get your feet wet. The more track time the better.
You need a helmet and a good running car that'll pass a tech inspection. No need for major modifications to begin with. IMO the kumho are OK to do your first event on, but then even though you want to stay on street tires, you want something a little gripper like Azenis or Kumho MX.
Going to autocrosses local schools and practices doesn't hurt your learning curve either.

STUSA will be at Buttonwillow this weekend. Spaces still available, and we have some instructors available too...
saturday west loop only $90
sunday full track $140
both days $190
http://www.speedtrialusa.com
each day you will get 4x20 min sessions. so it's a pretty good deal if you sign up for both days.
All you need to do is bring a helmet. your car is fine. you can learn a lot with any car. check if you have enough brakes, if not, goto Pep Boys are buy a set of the Raybestos Ceramic Enhanced pads. they are cheap (sub $50) and totally track worthy.
