Default Auto-x Type R exhaust question

So, I was under the car the other day and I thought that I could reduce the car's weight by getting rid of the big stock muffler and just putting in a straight pipe. My idea is to have a shop fab up flanges right before the muffler and make an identically flanged straight pipe with hangers in the same place as the muffler. Carry the straight pipe in the car until I arrive at the event. hop under the car and do the swap.

So my questions are:

How much weight savings?
Any power loss or gain?
Is this worthwhile or a waste of money?

Thanks,
Alan

Alan,

PM me. I have *exactly* the piece you are thinking about for sale and it bolts right up to the oem B-pipe. It also has a tip that looks almost like stock. We ran it on Jeff Brown's ITR at the 2001 Nat champ.

It saves quite a bit of weight--around 10-15 lbs or so. I can take a pic if you like, but it is exactly as you describe it. If the car is not your daily driver, you could almost use it to drive to locals. For long trips I'd recommend switching, but it depends what your tolerance is. You will notice a gain in power in the upper RPMs too.

Keep in mind most events have a dB limit. Also, I thought such a free flowing exhaust system is not optimal for autox due to a loss in low-end TQ due to decrease in back pressure. Yes? No?

If you don't buy that thing from Todd, look into a SuperTrapp. I had one on my Type R and it seemed quite a bit lighter than the stock setup. I had a similar setup on my Subaru, here's some pics...

You still have the oem B-pipe and cat doing a decent job of increasing back pressure, so a straight pipe won't do nothing but help.

Lose the tip, lol. The slip-on tip I had on mine weighed 1 pound. The pipe/flange/hanger itself weighs 4lbs. vs. 22lbs. for the stock muffler. May as well shave every pound you can if this is a race-only part.

Thin wall stainless tip = 1/4 at most. I'm **** about stuff like that.

On that note, have you ever weighed one of those Bosal Brospeed tips? The 4" model must weigh 5 lbs easily.

In comparison to other aftermarket exhausts, how loud would you say the supertrapp was on your type r? I'm running no mufler on my civic, on the street, and I need to come up with an exhaust solution soon.

It was loud, but not too bad. I ran it wide open (no discs installed) most of the time and it was tolerable. It tended to get real loud when VTEC kicked in. You can tune the sound by adding/removing discs though. I know a lot of people run 6-7 discs on the street, that way it's not quite as loud as running it wide open (no discs).
