Well I finally dragged my car for the 1st time ever. Lawerence and I drove up to Sac. town for the Wed night races and also stopping by Comptech to check things out for a min. Thanks Bob for the tour!
Anyway so for the drag races I used a friends set of slicks from his R and also tuned the car on the dyno the day before to adjust for the new 91octaine rating vs. the old 92 reading and to also adjust and tune it for the extreamly hot conditions at Sac. Before I hit around 235whp w/ 150trq. For the drag I tuned it to 220.1whp and 145trq to be safe.
Anyway so I dragged a few times due to the huge show up. I hit a 13.831 @ 97.641mph for my 1st time dragging with a 1.045 reaction time. Yeah I know that reaction sucks, but who cares it was my 1st time dragging at a track. Anyway I spun the tires pritty bad in 1st (not hooking up) and had to shift into 2nd while still burning the tires. In the middle of second the tires finally hooked up. Here's the info on that run:
Sacramento Raceway
Midnight Grudge Fest
8-8-01
Temp around 100+deg @ 6:18pm
Weight 2590 (w/o driver)
Current whp as of 8-7-01 (220.1whp & 145trq) lower due to tuning changes for temp. conditions.
Using MH slicks on stock R rims with A032R's on the rear.
Reaction 1.045
I1 2.005
I2 5.811
I3 8.925
I4 11.567
E.T. 13.831
MPH 99.891
As you can see major traction issues from 1-2nd gear. Anyway I did heat up the slicks, but getting a good launch is quite hard with this setup. BTW- I lauched at 6000rpms. Anyway so the second time dragging my reaction time dropped to .591, however I hit a 14.143 @ 98.091mph due to even more traction issues. Bad burnout which caused no traction in 1-top of 2nd gear. Here's that info:
Sacramento Raceway
Midnight Grudge Fest
8-8-01
Temp around 95deg @ 7:08pm
Weight 2590 (w/o driver)
Current whp as of 8-7-01 (220.1whp & 145trq) lower due to tuning changes for temp. conditions.
Using MH slicks on stock R rims with A032R's on the rear.
Reaction .591
I1 2.283
I2 6.149
I3 9.258
I4 11.879
E.T. 14.1091
MPH 98.091
Lawernce then did a few runs and got a 13.9 and a 14.1 with the same traction issues
Then for the final run of the night I did a 13.870 @ 99.891mph w/ a bad 1.110 reaction time. Yes I was asleep at the light tree. Here's the chart:
Sacramento Raceway
Midnight Grudge Fest
8-8-01
Temp around 90deg @ 9:45pm
Weight 2590 (w/o driver)
Current whp as of 8-7-01 (220.1whp & 145trq) lower due to tuning changes for temp. conditions.
Using MH slicks on stock R rims with A032R's on the rear.
Reaction 1.110
I1 2.085
I2 5.916
I3 9.004
I4 11.638
E.T. 13.870
MPH 99.891
Anyway that event was just for fun and to see whats going on with my car. Next time I'm gonna just work on the launch better. Maybe a 7000rpm launch with a fat burnout before hand with my own slicks rather then being east on a friends slicks. Anyway we expect that if I did hook up better I should have hit mid 13's with that current setting! Not bad for 220whp. Also next time I will jump the power back to 235+whp and also cut back on weight.

Nice ET's, but the trap speeds don't figure for 220whp. I'd be expecting high 12's at maybe 105'ish with that much power.
i still don't get it......
200+whp n/a cars can expect 12's, but supercharged 220+whp can expect high 13's, whats up with that?
how much does that freak'n supercharger weigh!!! j/k

Nice Mike, maybe next time I'll have to come out with you and show you how it's done
j/k...practice makes perfect...as winter starts there will be Saturday "Test & Tune" days, where you can get in 13-18 runs...
1 major reason for the slower times is due to the large amount of weight that the car has...2590lbs without driver. A local daily driven itr has his weight at 2300(on the same scale that Mike weighed his at) and runs a 13.9-14.2 on drag radials but then again that is 290lbs weight difference.
Mike - did you remove just the box and leave the amps in?

I think Rboosted can do better with some practice too. He's got much more done than me and my times (corrected for altitude) are about the same as his. Try launching at a lower rpm, with the low end the blower gives it's hard to get traction even with slicks. In street races I launch at about 1500, and about 3500 at the strip.
I was doin a 14.35 @ 193.5whp with heavy 225/35/17 rim/tire combo. We had no reaction time b/c the time was running after launching the car (time runs after released the an light gate)
Altitude about 750 meters
32 degrees temperature
I can´t believe stock ITR´s running 13.xx the 1/4 mile!

Actually I did remove the box and the rear seats. I have alot of weight to loose still that I have added on. Yesterday was just a test day for Lawerence and I. Yeah I know I could do better, but heck it was the cars first time being dragged. Like I said before we expect a mid-low 13's with that exact setup with that same weight and power. As for the N/A revving, heck I rev my car to 9000rpms (real rpms). The Indicated rpms on the tach is about 9500rpms due to the error margin my tach has.
If I jump the power back up to 235whp and drop the weight more (a lot more) I should go into the 12's perhaps. However my R is not a drag racer. Maybe if the rumored drag strip. Driving 2.5hrs (400miles round trip) is just annoying to drag right now. But we'll see. I just wanted to post some preliminary numbers to show you what my cars up to. If you can read drag timeslips well you will be able to see the major traction problem I was having. No biggie though...

hey Mike,
Were you falling asleep at the line there buddie? haha jk... you got some pretty good times for the first time dragging, so dont think u did bad or anything. As Austin said, maybe we need to teach you how the pro's do it. haha just kidding man. Maybe when you move the power back up, get some of your own slicks and get more practice, im sure you can hit high 12's. cya latr

Yeah the 1st 1sec reaction time, it was my first time so I was slow. The second time I hit a .539 which was hella go as being my 2nd time. My 3rd time I hit a 1.1sec time because I wasn't paying attention because I was closing my glove box because it kept falling open (even with it locked) everytime I shifted hard or did a burn out.
But yeah I did have a expert with me (Lawerence). He told me what to do and I did it. If I would have gotten 1-2 more runs in I know I would have hit mid 13's forsure but they stopped me early and told me that the track is closing early so I can't run! Oh well maybe next time. Good learning experience though. I got find my cars weight, got to see comptech, got to practist burnouts with slicks, got to practist launching with slicks, etc...

Those times are about what i would expect.
From what I can see you pretty much have it maxxed out. Maybe a little
could be had from better shifting if you are deficient in that area.
But overall, not bad. Anyone else find it odd that an NA car with the same
power level will usually run faster than a SC car?

Yes, I find that very odd too. What gives with those s/c cars? In my opinion the fastest way into the 12's is NITROUS!
The way I see it, most ITR owners will do I/H/E upgrades right off the bat. Add drag radials and a nitrous kit to the mix and you're in the 12's. Plain and simple.

Actually yeah thats what were looking into right now. I'm also running a street disc which doesn't really help with my setup too much for dragging. I was also running PS and A/C at the track with a richness problem at the bottom end. As for maxxing it out, maybe. When looking at the timeslips, their is a lot of room for improvment. Especally in the first and second gear. As for supercharged cars being slow? Um no. I have seen many JRSC R's on the east coast pull 12's with 10psi-up. Heck I'm only running 5psi, plus add in the power loss for the heat build up at the track. At the moment I can jump to 10psi, but I have no need to. I like playing around with the 5psi. I remember when I hit 200whp with my 5psi and everyone said oh thats the most I will get out of it, etc... Heck I now can get it too 235whp with that same 5psi! Not bad. All we need now is some more track testing along with a slight diet to put my weight with the other drag type R's. Stock weight sucks!
I always run a street disc. Whats your point?
Regarding the 12s JR cars, how much power were they making?
I'll bet they make more power than an NA car running similar times.
I never said they were outright slow, i said they were slower when compared
to NA cars of similar power output.
Yes stock weight sucks. My car still weighs over 2500lbs even with all the stuff ive
removed.

I ran 13.6's at 108 on street tires with 230hp with a JR sc. Car weighed 2875 with me in it, so SC does work you just have to tinker with it as you do any modified car.
Not bashin your times Mike just defending the supercharger (which I sold, go figure)

Your gonna need allot more than 235 horsepower to put your car into the
12's. Remember it's harder to go from 13'2 to 12's than it is to go from say
16's to 15's!
Out of curiosity, how did you warm up those slicks (how long, and how much smoke) did you use the bleach box? What size slicks? What was the tire pressure? I'm assuming they are Mickey Thompsons?
I say this because if a slick is warmed up properly you should have absolutely no
problems with traction. After rolling through te bleach box, you start to do a burnout, the tires should spin really hard at first because they are wet, but after a few seconds you should feel the tires start to grab and they will literally pull your car down the track even with the Emergency brake on.
But good job 13.8 is not bad, I hope to see a 12.8 time slip from you some day.

Wassup Mike,
Wouldn't your SC'ed R motor work better with a tranny with longer gearing....say like a GSR or LS gearbox! Just wondering?
Isn't the R's shorter gearing made to work with the higher redline and power made in the upper RPM range of the NA motor. The JRSC makes awesome torque in the midrange under VTEC and wouldn't longer gearing be better suited to harness this power at lower RPMs?
If I remember correctly while reading one of SCC's articles last year, the JRSC Type R was having trouble with the factory gearing on the R after they first installed it. I havent seen any any updates since....so I don't know!
I have heard of many instances where folks run into this problem when converting to forced induction from NA. I have heard on a few folks switching to a GSR or LS gearbox when goin' forced induction!
Any comments.....this is a good topic!

The track was REALLY slow that day. A guy I know with a SC Si was up their running with some slicks for the first time and he only hit a 14.5@93 with a 1.9 60 ft
He had previously ran a 13.8@97ish with a 2.2 60 on street tires. You may have seen him, his car is blue(imagine that) and has ClubSi stickers on it.
The heat was REALLY bad Wednesday

low rpm is rather irrelevant due to the nature of drag racing.

But SC doesnt need that since its solely based on engine rpm.
A little bit off the subject. Have you guy's been having problems with the new track official at SAC. Raceway? When I went up their 2 fridays ago the officials were spraying the water box like amateurs!!!! When we line up a car for a burn out we have to get them WAY out of the box cause of excess water. Also, when we do so the rear tires on in the water TOO! WTF? I hope they don't pull that kinda crap this weekend for the NHRA race.

sorry for the late reply but I'm still here at DSR. And yes its 2:30am! I told you I live here!
Anyway, yeah the times seemed slow at Sac. The heat was real bad. Thank god I had A/C!
Anyway, thanks for clearing that up Steve. I knew I could count on you to help me with this!
Yeah we'll try again soon to hit better times when I get the chance.
