Crx vs 92 and up hatch.
I got about 3200 to spend on a car so i narrowed it down to either a crx or a 5th gen hatch. What would you guys do in this situation. 1.Should i go with a crx with a engine swap.(There are a couple around here with ls swaps for 3500 and under But i want a b16 so i can later do a b20/vtec.)2 Should i but a cheap crx for like 1500 and get a b16 with the rest of tha money.3 Spend all my money on a stock 5th gen hatch. I know i should make my own decision but i still would love yo opinions. Also, Wich would be better for drag/ street racing, a b20vtec crx or an h22 5th gen hatch. Thanks
Well then one thing you should ask yourself is how many people do you want to have room for?? The CRX is a 2 seater and always will be the hatch has a backseat which could be taken out at the track. What will be your main purpose for the car?? Drag? Street? Auto-X?

I agree, I would decide how much "People space" you need and make the decision between the CRX or the 4th Gen EF.

I won't necessarily try to steer you either way- if you are contemplating a 4th gen civic / 2g rex you will have things to replace & fix, i.e. hub assemblies, misc. leaks/creaks, etc. If you go w/ a 5th or 6th gen civic you will probably have a few less headaches. I am partial to the ED chassis. Take into account the potential costs/repairs & what your ultimate goal is & then get what suits you best. HTH

If you want to be apart from the rest of the crowd get the CRX.
They have just about reached "cult car" status and they are getting harder and harder to find. My 100% stock one always has people asking about it.
That can either turn you on to them or turn you off, I guess. LOL
See my sig and screen name for futher explanation. LOL

Room is not an option. I am gonna take outthe back seats any ways. I am going to use the car for street/drag so wich would be better. I heard 5th gen hatches are a lil bit slower than crxs when they have the same engine but i also heard that an h22 hatch would beat a b20/vtec. One more thing that makes this issue complicated is that a guy has a 5th glen hatch for 1500 but he will sell it with a ls installed for 3200. That is cheap, But i dont know if i should wait for a b16 or ls crx to come in autotrader.
have an ef hatchback with a b16 in it. fast and it's not something alll people expect. it's exceptionally light and easy to work on. i would say go with the crx or get yourself a ef hatchback. but if you want something with a little more style get the 92 or up
"a little more style...."
I resent that!!! <------ CRX owner...
My CRX is also 100% stock...and a LOT of people ask me questions about my rex. In the past 3 days, I have had one person offer to buy it each day, believe it or not. Today, at autozone, some guys were amazed that my interior looked nearly brand new. They were desperate, because finding a good condition CRX is hard nowadays. If it's just for drag, and you are planning on stripping the interior, then I'd steer you towards the hatch..because I want more CRX's with full interiors out there! The only CRX owners I personally know, have stripped interiors. Sure, they save a bit of weight, but come on, how many ladies find bare metal as attractive as a nice black interior
??? Maybe those guys are married...and I'm not.

Supposidly, the engine is too big for the car, it cost alot to have someone do it for u, I heard you lose power steering(I think i heard that one), And most say your handleing is shot to ****. BUT, people that actually have an h22 in a crx say the swap was hard, but with a suspinsion upgrade, it handle pretty damn good. So wich would be faster and more reliable, a b20vtec crx or an h22 crx
I can't speak from experience; but IMO, I would choose an H22. The vast majority of the posts I have read state that the swap does require more work, and potentially more money. The same posts also said that it was worth it, and that handeling was not bad. My main concern would be the axles. I have read numerous posts that discussed axle binding, and breakage. If I had the extra cash laying around I'd do it.
As far as reliability I would speculate that the H22 would also ultimately be the better choice. I am aware that a a b20/vtec or ls/vec that has been built correctly may last a while - but I feel that Hond's planning is better in principal over the course of time.
Another thing to remember though: you are changing multiple aspects in the design that Honda created; this will likely lessen the life of an engine &/or chassis exponentially- you must accept that things can get fucked up before you dive into a project like this.

So your statement is not entirely true! My 89dx hatch is lighter than my buddies 90si crx.
I like MROCK's thinking. I'd prefer a Beautifully cared for BONE STOCK 88-91 CRX SI over a gutted Raced out H22/B20/B18/B16 CRX. That's just me. It's too easy for someone to go from "Daily Street" to "Gutted Race". The other way around is more respectable. Check this, if you buy a hatch for $1.5K, then dump another $2K for a B16 swap, another $1G on Suspension, brakes, paint and other stuff, how much do you think it's worth??? about $4300??? BWWAAAAAHHAAAAAAA!!!!! I'm sure you've dug into the Classifieds enough to find out what's up. Personally I LOVE my 88 HF. I can park almost anywhere, Get's 43mpg (fer now), and it's dirt cheap to maintain ($.79/qt.oil specials!). I bought it for 1G (luckyme!) and Overall I can say it's worth $1500 with 200K on it! People get caught up in "the moneypit" mindstate. Just remember, no matter how much $$$ you spend, there will always be someone faster.

But when push comes to shove, you're still jockin' an HF... and believe me, 'excitement' is not spelled 'hf'.
I think my g/f would pimp-slap me if I ever put my interior back in and swapped back to my old motor. I actually suggested reinstalling my interior and she called me a dumbass.
I don't think anyone here is going to believe that an engine swap is going to raise a car's selling price, either.

Lose power steering? That's OK, because all of the USDM rexes' I have seen don't have power steering in the first place..
The engine will sit very awkward, placing the axles in a weird position, which is one of the biggest obstacles I can think of. If you got $6,000+ to throw into the swap...go for it. If not, I'd just go with an LS...with building it up, and putting a new head on there, you can get 300+ HP out of that no problem. My brother is running 370 hp with that setup. The b-series has a lot more parts available than the H22A, and more knowledge is available on that swap. For a balance of reliability, cost, and difficulty, I belive the B's would be your best bet.
BTW: The HF is a very good canidate for a swap..it's the lightest..don't be dissing it...

get the 5th gen with the b18 swap it dosent sound like hes even got the engine put in it yet have it bored out to a 84 mm and pop in some b20 pistons ; the b20 and ls block are the same the 20s just bored out by honda then later on drop the b16 head on personaly if its just for drage raceing and your swaping the engine any way id get a 4th gen hach with a blown moter u will pay between 100 300 the crx realy is a classic and a sham to see it destroyed and you might want to do a lil more reserch before you dedicate your self and wallet to a frankengine for your swap a turbos always more fun
