little side play in my "new" si tranny, is this ok
this is my third tranny and i was assured it was a good tranny with no grinds. My other two tranny's didn't have any side play but they were both bad (grinds in third). I replaced the release bearing on the new tranny and i was planning on installing it, logic being that it couldn't possibly be any worse than my last one. what do you guys think? its about a mm or less but it does move (up and down, not in and out) thanks
please help people.......you know how frustrating it is to throw in a tranny that someone claims to be great "no grinds" only to find out its worse than your old one.
Well the trann i have on my car now, has no sideplay or anything, and i just replaced clutch and all, and it grinds 3rd. My freinds si has little play and is the best shifting tranny i have ever driven in a d series crx.
the rod that sticks out of the tranny and connects to the clutch/engine. I can wiggle that back and fourth about 1 mm. not in and out(into the transmission) but side to side. I hope that helps, i know im not explaining very well

That would be the input shaft, and the sideplay is from worn input shaft bearings.....it'll probably be fine, but might make noise in neutral and possibly could start leaking trans fluid onto your clutch, causing it to slip. Well that's my case anyway, hopefully yours will be fine. But the only real way to have a perfect trans is to rebuild it with new seals/bearings etc.(been there.) BTW a "good" trans shouldnt have any input shaft play.
really.......what bearing is it? i replaced the release bearing and that wasn't it. as far as taking the tranny apart, i'm a little nervous but if you think its an easy deal i would love to get this tranny like new. please help
Yeah the bearing is cheap, but the install is a BITCH and you need skill. That particular input shaft bearing is pressed in. And if you havent taken a trans apart don't, unless your friends know how. BTW the release bearing is external, inputs are on the inside.
honestly imo its not that difficult to replace that bearing... as long as you get or borrow a nice pair of spring clip pliers, that was the thing that gave me the most trouble... follow the helms to tear it down and try to keep the main shaft in one piece, as i found out the synco's are directional and causes a pain in the *** if you don't know that... but once the main/input shaft is out take the clutch housing to a shop and have em pull the bearing, takes like two min, get the new bearing and oil seal, press it in, line the main shaft and the counter shaft up with the shift forks put them into place put the casing back on after you lay down some instant gasket and torque her down... and lemme tell ya its one helluva learning experience tearing a tranny down... i could def. got more indepth about it, but i'll spare ya'll

If you have enough skills to rebuild an engine, and you have a helms to guide you, then you can rebuild a tranny.
