Default Weird sound coming from engine during low rpms...Help app.

I'm new to the board, as a poster anyways. I usually reside on the hpoa.org boards but don't know what the heck is going on as the site's not up. Anyways, I had a valve adjustment done about 2K miles ago and recently, when gearing down around 2K rpms or less, my engine makes a kind of shuderring noise. I've popped the hood and revved the engine using the throttle lever until the car warms up. Once warmed up, when I rev it to say 5K rpms and let them drop, I've witnessed that the valve cover makes a nuhnanah type noise from underneath it. I figured it may have been a valve or something similar, so I took off the valve cover and everything looks to be ok, but i haven't checked the specs for the intake and exhaust side valve with a feeler gauge yet. Does anyone have any ideas what this noise could actually be? Hopefully not bent valves or something similar Thanks for your time and look forward to educated responses

Are you referring to the timing belt tensioner or improper tension on the timing belt itself? Sounds like a possibility because i've noticed my belts like alt. and power steering seemed to have been loud lately until I actually put some lube on their spindle nut assemblies that helped quiet them down. Let me know, thanks

Would any of you luders out there know if there is an update for the auto tensioner TSB ? Also, if it's causing the timing belt to make that Grrrr type noise at low rpms, is it more than likely non-repairable? I'd appreciate any other info. on this at all

Is there an updated (improved) version of the autotensioner out there now then? Thanks for the help so far

A compression test won't hurt but i don't think that you'll find that you numbers have changed that much (in spec) unless you damaged your motor. Anyways, from previous searches i've found that the autotensioner seems to auto-tighten the belt too much when it's about going and needs to be replaced seeing that it's hydraulic. This is what seems to be causing the grrr type noise on deleceration. At least that's what i deduced from reading. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

you said , decelerating... does that mean that it does it when in gear? the only time i can hear mine in gear is when im in 2nd gear and going to park or something like that. its real noticable noise when i rev over 4k, and let it drop, from 2k-down it seems to have a rattle. is this the same effect?

Yeah sorry,
I was trying to pm you but it won't let me do it because of the status on here. If you search under "timing belt tensioner" on here, you should find pretty good explanation of the symptom.

Could you tell me if there was an updated part # for the Tensioner when your's got replaced? I'd appreciate it, thanks. Also, what kind of labour are we talking about here? I'm thinking I might as well get them to replace the timing belts, water pump e.t.c. while they are down there since my car is at 45K miles anyway ( I drive hard at times). Thanks

Would any you that got the tensioner replaced have a copy of the tsb # (i.e. 617866) along with any repair information. I'd appreciate it. Alldata doesn't provide Honda repair info anymore

Just thought i'd inform everyone here that i'm getting the belts, water pump and tensioner replaced as we speak since the car is almost at 50K miles anyway. I think it's better sooner than later. The belts were pretty slack by the way. I figure that was what was causing the noise. The tensioner more than likely failed to sense any slackness in the belts and didn't tighten them is more than probable cause. Oh well, hopefully that is the solution.

I only trust the dealership for this type work seeing that they have all the OEM parts as well as experience with Honda cars. The shop is charging around $500 for the job, but like I said, it's because i'm changing out all the belts, tensioner and water pump as well. So, I feel it's about an average price but well worth it maintenance wise.
