how do i identify an ls tranny from a gsr tranny......
Well, I think that H/A didnt make an cable GSR tranny, so right there, if its a hydro that eleminates that. Unless they took the LS tranny apart and put the GSR guts in it. The Clutch cable type LS says S1 on it.

can't tell from the case, or the S/Y80 on the case. Only way to tell is either to put it in first and rotate the input shaft and count how many times it turns compared to the output shaft. Do some math on the known GSR and LS gear ratios to figure out the same. Could also use reverse since it is a 3:1 ratio, and just do the math on the 4.40 and 4.266 FD.

Nope.. the LS/GSR/Type R trans case is all the same.. and the LS/GSR will some times both say S80 or Y80.
Your best bet is checking the VIN tag. If it starts with JH4DC2, it's a GSr tranny, if it's JH4DC4, it's an LS.
Not So Nice Guy's info will also help you.
