what the balls.
I just got a 2000 SI, and i went up against... an Alero.... Now, i know the thing isnt stock, but i doubt it has too much done to it because I like.... live in a small town and the most modded car out there has intake exhaust headers TOPS.
Anyways, my car is stock, and i didn't think aleros were that fast so i gave it a go. I revved up to like 2 or maybe 3 grand. and on green eased out the clutch. It was a decent start but he had a little edge on me, let me tell you this thing WALKED on me until vtec and even then, he just stopped gaining..... I know you can't buy a car stock and make it a race car, but this is an alero with at least an exhaust, and i doubt much more. Is my car really slow??! what kind of modifications would help me? and i KNOW i don't know a lot about cars, racing, or anything, but am i launching wrong? if so, can someone help me? Thanks everyone in advance.

off the line ur car is not that great u would own him once you get up in speed. look u drive a stock 4cyl honda that is not uncommon i hate it just as much as u do gettin beat by grocery getters so the best thing to do it just not street race and u be alright
did a google search...came up with a bunch of cardomain pages
alero's were running around 15.8-16.00...right around where your car is, maybe even a bit faster. one even ran a 15.3 with CAI, header, Exhaust, and ECU...they arent as slow as they appear I guess...
http://www.sounddomain.com/id/xtrkestrel - 15.3 olds alero...good enough to take on a GSR

I autoxed upstate and there was a guy with an Alero and that thing was bone stock and was rippin it up for sure...the thing was on 3 wheels almost the entire course actually.
HMmmm I thought to myself "thats an Alero?"
To bad there so friggin ugly.
By the way I launch my b18c around 6000 rpm which allows vtec to kick in right off the line.

Thanks everyone....
Launching with higher rpms? like how high? Then just ease out the clutch so i dont sit there for liek 5 min?
oh, and i'm straight edge, this isn't my name.
So uh... Ovaltine was it?
**** you.

the 1st couple of gears are the worst to compare with. Especially if your not extrodinarily faster then your apponiant. At higher speeds/gears you see weither or not the car has the powah!
By the way, the new Alero's (the V-6 version) has 200hp, and 170lbs of torque, and it weighs around 3000lbs. So it makes sense that he wasn't as slow as you thought it would be.

si's are nice cars and the b16 motor has a lot of potential, but because its an si doesnt mean its fast. my d16y8 w/ cai and catback doesnt lose to many cars, but then again, thats because i realize its only a 1.6L sohc slow piece of **** and i dont engage in street races with that in mind................... until i turbo
ok dude u dont ease of the cluth thats why u got owned, thje guy drives better then you. U need to rev up to 3500 or 3800 at most and just drop the cluth u wont stay in the same place, u dont have enough power so ur car will go. And from there vtec wont be to far, then you should spank them. i have seen good drivers in Si pull some great times, sorry to say you need some work thats why u got worked
Gezer,
Thanks a lot, I appreciate the info, and everyone i appreciate it too. Wow, 200 from an alero. thats decent.
Wish i coulda afforded the SRT-4
Eh.... i like the SI a lot though, and I'll try to make it "fast".
yeah, I live in a wooded area, but we have this awesome racing spot. Its almost a half mile long, it's on property that's OWNED by someone, and they MADE it for that reason. Well lit, never any traffic except us. So... to the guy that thought he was gonna say something smart, shut it.

alero's are the same as grand am Gt's i think. and they are fast. They run with my B16 CRX for a little bit. so it makes sense if your losing to them. Cause i eat up stock Si's. just get some NAWWS DAWG and then get a twin turbo HKS hyper super damper exhaust with the resonating tip and some guages and you'll be set.........or just have fun and dont worry about losing.

Off topic..... I was drag racing at California Speedway late last month, and tried launching at 6g and snapped an axle
what tires are you running?

That sucks man.
BTW not highjacking just answering the question
When I launch at 6000 at first I let the clutch out pretty slow and once the tires start gripping (they will spin slighty) I give more gas and release the clutch out smoothly. Now this whole procedure takes a second or less.
I tried to explain this to a buddy who has the exact same swap and he couldn't do it at first but once we got together and I could show him it was no problem. He got a kick out of vtec-ing right from the get-go.
Anyways I was running 195-50 15 Yokahoma avid t-4's when I first started messing around with this launch rpm.
I usually run 205-50-15 Azenis and once I put those back on it hooks up even better...although the Azenis aren't really a great drag tire they do ok.
My set-up is actually a b18c itr motor with lsd and what not.

I guess thats directed to me...
Reaction time is just that. As soon as the last amber even thinks of glowing Im on it. However I havent ran at 6000 at the drag strip I think it was more like 4000 which really doesn't do squat for me.
I will find a road out in the middle of nowhere...oh wait thats where I live, and practice the launches. Drag racing is pretty unfortunate that way actually, cause to me once I hit the 60 ft. mark Im pretty well bored at that point.
