What is the width and offset of your wheel? this plays a big part in how wide a tire you can buy. I would recommend going to a tire store and ask around. I've got 18 by 7.5 in the rear and can run as high as a 265/35, but in the front I have 18 by 7 and I'm unsure as to how big a tire I can put on it.

A buddy of mine has 275s in the rear of his s2000.
I didn't believe it when he told me, but yea I actually saw it. Its pretty wide.

widest in the rear you can squeeze under there would be 10.5", however I would only recommend 10".
for the fronts, it varies. typically 8", but you can go up to 9 and even 9.5" in the front with aftermarket coilovers.

with custom made wheels you can get 10.5's in the rear with 285's on them... but the offsets have to be perfect.... the S2000 board has better knowledge of this!
I'm running 245/45's on the stock rims in the rear... fronts I'm still running the 205's, but will probably go 215 or so when they need replacements. I'm doing this to take away some of the oversteer for my wife, otherwise It'd probably be runnign 225's in the front also.

From what I've read/heard anything larger than 245 will reduce the actual contact patch on a s2k. It may be 255. (Trying to jog my memory) 265/275 on a 17" rim is probably a bit too much.

Thats what I was thinking, especially on the turns, it seems like they're be rolling every direction.
As far as the fronts go, my brother is running 225's on stock rims, and I couldn't imagine much more than that without a spacer or some new wheels with a better offset.

Note: It depends on tires. You really want to measure the contact patch. From all my readings, it seems as if the So2s that come stock are MUCH wider than your standard tire. I put my friend's Bridgestone So2s next to my Yoko ES100 (For my EK) and they were considerably wider.
My tire 205x50x15.
His tire 205x55x16 (front).
Perhaps someone with a S2k can provide some light on it (I have only been researching as of late).

I'll measure in a little bit.. I'll compare Falken FK-451 225's to Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 245's to Potenza S-02 205's and give the actual reads.. Should have this up by tomorrow.

who told you this? As long as the rim width is the correct size, you will increase the contact patch by running wider tires.

Not sure, that's what I read on S2ki. Maybe it was with the STOCK 16" oem wheels.
Edit: I'm pretty sure it was the stock 16". Sorry about the confusion, busy day at work.
Flame away.

a co-worker of mine has 285's in the front and 225's in the rear on some 18's mille miglia(or whatever the name is..) wheels..he said no rubbing issue at all and it looks great as well, BTW the tires were Toyos
stock rims, you can squeeze 275's on there. no joke. but it is a squeeze and you don't really want to do that unless you have a specific purpose for doing so.
seriously, just stick with the OEM S02's at 225/50's or any other tire at 245/45's (which are essentially the same size).
