I am thinking of starting a race shop, i am tired or driving to get and/or look at things so is there any shop owner or worker that can give me some tips.
I have the money just not the knowledge
I know accounting and that $hit but i need to know what are popular parts and where to get them cheap and what kinda licenses you have to have

all i know, to be sucessful your gonna have to know your ****...and have your customers trust you on your knowledge...if u can run the business end then do soo...you'll have to find tuners and techies for everything else...earn a good repuatation and you will go far...

i think i am going to do domestics as well
but i need to know where to find good mechanics and other guys i will do all book keeping and most sales i just need people to do the work
around here people only have bolt ons due to the fact there is no shop

 

you have to remember what the bread of your industry is. Ricers and bolt ons. Most people dont want to spend the time or money to get real stuff done. So you have to have clears and altezzas. As well as bolt ons. Sorry thats just fact. America wants cheap quality crap. Look at Saturn(car company) as an example. Cheap quality crap. One of the most sucessful car companies out there.

 

You'll need alot of capital to start up, find good companies to deal with, and employees who know their stuff and who you can have some trust in.
Also be prepared to put 99% of your time into it

 

well i plan on stocking peice stright through mufflers and some apexi n1 universals but other than that i think it will be bolt on stuff i order
i thought maybe i would order twice a week and then if someone needs it sooner i would charge them overnight shipping
trust me i know there are way more ricers here but i think i could pull it off

i think nos is illegal here who cares but here is a question for all the shop owners if nos is illegal can you sell it or can you sell the bottles for that matter
in other words if it is illegal can you sell everything but nos and not get in trouble

I know you are from the same town as i am, but never have seen you hang out or anything, If you think that all people around here just have bolt ons, then you are mistaken, come hang out with me for a second, also, its Nitrous, not NOS , There are two places i know of that sell it here and trust me we all run it. As for the shop around here its real hard with Nopi being so close, A friend and i do some tuning and swaps out of his garage and that's about it , There is a couple of reds with some small shops (Nopi ditributors) they say they are race shops, but when we ask them to race for some reason they don't want to, i guess the automatic RS eclipse with a 60 shot might not hang. I see what you are saying there are a lot of Ricers around here with no money, that try real hard sometimes too hard.

and like i said to you i just moved here from Boston (Marthas Vineyard for the last two years) so I have no clue what is going on in chatt. TN. But I am trying to get out and meet people I just work alot and have almost no time. So I will meet yall this weekend.

around here i think it is mainly ricers though and so far i have only lost to one import a nsx so i don't feel to bad

most places just post that it can not be used on public roads...that should cover you as far as legalities are concerned...it's not like it crack, ALWAYS ILLEGAL...whereas nitrous or no cat or whatever is NEVER illegal on a track...

 

i think for a shop to be succesful the owner must be passionate about the sport..if you just wanna sell light bulbs and exhaust..expect to be open only a few years..but if you show customers that you are there not only to make a living..but because you enjoy it...be it draggin or road racing...build it and they will come..

 

you need to go to your town hall and apply for a tax id number and business license. you may also need certian permits if you plan on working w/ chemicals such as oil,antifreeze etc...
laws in your state dictate what youll need.of course youll need liabilty insurance,workers comp insurance,etc...get in touch w/ a small business lawyer for all the details.

theres a COMPANY IN CALIFORNIA that stock almost all aftermarket performance items out there,its called PRO MOTION. not sure what city (sorry) anyhow once you establish an account w/ them they can drop ship items for you,which means you dont have to tie your money in inventory.

youll have to contact companys to find out who their distributers are and what they require (some want $1,000 buy-ins and some want $10,000+ buy-ins) thats were the drop ship company looks good

theres too much for me to list but do some research 1st,your local library is a great source...

 

oh ya i forgot to mention, if yo have any state back taxes,home,car etc... they wont give you your state tax # until theyre paid.
