not if you're over 6' 3", those things have no room!!!
but yeah, for a good RR/AX car,
Miata, 1st gen MR2, 2nd gen CRX, or EG Civic hatch.

I'm searching around for a nice late-1980s or early-90s BMW E30 325is or 318is. Lots of fun and they seem to hold up pretty well from the examples I have seen. They go for around $2500 to $4k on the west coast, depending on condition and state of modification. I drove a friend's Miata and for the money, I don't think it compares to an older BMW. The Miata had great brake feel but no power. A good 325is has 165 HP and the same in torque! That's not much less than my 2001 VW's VR6 engine. You'll still want to spend another $400-500 on a Harddog rollbar to make the Miata safe for track/autocross use.

From what I've seen so far in my brief ownership of an 87 E30 325, this is not the case. Parts are actually cheap since they made so many of the dang things. Junkyard finds are plentiful and new parts are not so bad. There are a few parts which are horribly expensive, and a few that are surprisingly cheap. But for the most part, the "BMW parts are expensive" thing seems to be not all that true.
YMMV, IMHO, and so on...

I agree on that. I've at some point seen prices for E30s (non-M3) and was pleasantly surprised at the prices of those vs. the prices for a comparible Honda part.
My wife's selling her '93 Nissan, NX2000.
