Default I just hit 230, 000 miles in my 88DX!!! Help me make her last 300,000..

Just wanted to know what oil I should be using(brand and viscocity) to make her last forever....Also, gasoline fumes are really strong from the car when I'm driving...is it cuz of the old motor or can I do somethin bout it? Thanx

I use Valvoline 5W-30 and have an 89 DX with around the same mileage that still runs great. I'd check your fuel lines for pinholes, check your charcoal canister for leaks or blockage and finally make sure your gas tank isn't rusted out. Some of the fuel lines run through the car and the seal for the fuel tank sender and pump is actually in the interior under the back seat (if you have a sedan; it's under the cargo compartment in the CRX).

I did absolutely nothing. My beater had 250ish on it and I drove it 600 miles a week. I didnt do any tuneups or anything. It seemed like when it was around 220 ish or so I went to do a tune up and found oil on all 4 plugs....cleaned them off, put them back in and returned the tuneup goods. She ran great up to 250ish and I moved out of cali and sold it.

you should use 20w50
car will be slower
but a car with many miles has less compression usually anyways and the thickere oil will help combat the problem

I have 180 on my ef, burns oil, have to put a quart in every Monday and Friday, friend said I had brown smoke out my tailpipe when I accelarate, but I have 210 across the board when I did a compression check, I was using 5w30, now I switched to 20w50, see how long it takes this time for the oil light to come on.

I have close to 220,000 on my 89 LX.. doesn't smoke or lose oil at all.

It was babied by the previous owner... he was a minister.

THANK GOD!

Now if only everthing else would act as good as the motor (i.e. dizzy, etc!)

As long as you maintain it, I don't see a problem with your car lasting 300k:

haha.. slywfbpsi sounds just like my old A6... I never did an oil change cuz it took 4 quarts in 2 weeks. I used everything in that engine, even that **** that thickens the oil... no good. But that GTX castrol oil actually was the only thing that lasted any time at all.

keep a new timing belt on it, and keep your timing adjusted. as the belt stretches, it advances the timing, which ends up breaking rods in the motor eventually. that and valve adjustments should keep you rolling.

just cuz your compression test was fine doesnt mean you dont have a problem,

do a leak down test, sounds like you have bad piston rings.

yeah, I've been dealing with it since January, but it has gotten worse since then, in the beginning it was just once a week, for oil, now it's twice, If I run it hard, it's like two days.

Check your gasket at the top of your gas tank that goes inbetween the pump and tank, they get old and start leaking fumes into the cabin sometimes because they dry up(it's under your passenger seat) or at least in my crx that's where it's positioned.
