My new rally weapon? Don't fall out of your chair laughing...

That's right, a Lada. Before you laugh too hard, take into account these 2 factors:
1) This car was built by Lada Canada (apparently at great expense) to win the Production under 1750 cc class in 1995, which it did.
2) Although it will need some work to get back into racing conditon (last raced in 2002), I am getting the car ABSOLUTELY FREE. Maybe it would be a fun candidate for the GRM 2004$ Challenge in the under 1000$ category?

Aren't LADA's actually Fiats? I think that is the same car as a Fiat Strada. If so, that means you can use all those Yugo parts laying around in yards.

Lada Canada? I didn't realize they were sold outside of Russia/Eastern Europe.
What is the engine (Fiat, Lada, ...)?
GRM $2004 Challenge would be cool.

Lol...Good god... I did almost fell out of my chair laughing. Altough when you mentioned a Lada race car (oxymoron?), i was half expecting the ol Signet (half-*** Fiat clone)...
Hehe, but i'm sure you'll have fun with the POS just the same. What about parts for the thing? The thing is probably a full custom job. And cuz you just know it will break sooner rather than later
These cars make me embarassed to be Russian.

Actually, there are 2 parts cars I can strip for free as well, which should help the parts situation. Although there will surely be some custom parts, it is a Production class rally car, so that means it's 95% stock. They sold quite a few of those cars in Montreal and there are even garages that specialize in fixing them The Signet was a Fiat 124 clone, but I'm not sure if the Samara was a Fiat copy as well.
These cars are low quality in many senses, but they are tough, as they would need to be in Russia. They are extremely low-tech, but that's not always a bad thing in rallying. Also, as I learned with my Mazda 323 last winter, power is not that important in the snow and gravel.
Maybe I'll just bring it out to Solo 2 with its staggering 70 hp and smoke your CRX, so beware!

The Samara was actually Lada's first own design and the engine was actually designed by Porsche, although there was an agreement that Lada could not mention that in their marketing of the car, for good reason i guess. The main problem with these cars was not so much the overall design or any individual parts, but the extremely poor workmanship in assembling the thing. Essentially, the car is worse than the sum of it's parts. But I would imagine a hand built race car would be very well put together and quite reliable. The car is light, has good power and will certainly smoke ur ol 323...
Have fun!

Lada has a good reputation in rallying in Europe and G.B., and I think the Samara was the basis for one of the last Lada Challenge series. Lots of good rallyists (like Markko Martin) got their start in those things, and they are understood to be tough.
Sounds like fun.

Not that far from reality, look at the picture on page 14 of the July 2003 Norht American Pylon of a Lada autocrossing in F Prep. Likely not a big FTD challenge but someone was having fun and it made it in print.
Lada has reputation for being primitive but taking a beating and you absolutely can't beat the acqusition price. Have fun!

Damn i missed that, hehe. Bring it on sucka!
Actually, the CRX is not mine but Sev's who also runs Solo1 with you guys occasionally. I co-drive it with him for Solo2...
But seriously, you should come out to more Solo2 events. And I would come out to do more Solo1 with you guys but I would not do it in someone elses car. Nor I, nor especially the owner would feel comfortable with that, especially at a place like Sanair for example. But damn, i'm so jealous that you guys will run at the Glen at the end of the season... But i am shopping around for a car now, so eventually I will... But all the friggin CRXs around here are either rusted out or overpriced. May have to go south to get something decent...

Wow...GRM2004 competition would be cool. I've always dreamed of a "honda-tech" team going and sweeping the competition
.
.
The GRM thing would be just for a laugh. The Lada does 0-60 in 14 seconds and I don't want to modify it out of the Production class rules, so there's no way to make it competitive. It may be fun to try the autocross with my Civic VX wheels wrapped in 205-60-13 RA1's (I'm pretty sure the Lada is 4 x 100 mm).
Jean, I hope you can find a car soon enough to come out to the Glen. You have until late October to get organized! As for going south, I too think I will by my next Honda product South of the border...
Has anyone got a scan of that North American Pylon cover with the Samara? I can't seem to find it online...

We use to have Lada's in England, very much a first time drivers car, or in otherwords a farmers car, but there were some upgrades available for it, search Google Uk and there might be some clubs around still.
Congrats on the free race car, just make sure it's up to par and SAFE before you venture off with it, dont get yourself hurt. Good luck, and congrats again. If it's factory built, irrespective of make, it's got a significant amount of development. And for free, will make a great car, even after a couple thousand to make right.

They don't specifically identify it as a Lada Samara but seeing your pic sure jogged my memory from reading North American Pylon yesterday.

Thanks for the scan, although that's not a Samara. If it's a Lada, it's a model that was never imported to Canada (there was a model smaller than the Samara in Europe, this might be it).
POuahaha...sorry...pouhahahaha!!!!
Maybe, you should keep your's Orange wheels for it!
I'm shure if you could find the LADA Canada member's...they would help you out with your request.
It's a shame that they closed there parts distribution near the 20 before the Lafontaine tunnel....
A friend of mine was saying(he had a Niva) everything is fine with those...except for rubber hose and likes, since they use real rubber instead of synthetic.
Without Lada parts inventory(distributor) no parts sellers, even Canadian tire, sells parts....what are you going to do?
Nice project,btw!

Laugh all you want, but there are many 12-13 second Ladas in Russia.
Basically, Lada is a Russian Civic. Many are riced out, but there's a decent number of shops that will build those engines. I'll post pics when I find them.
