I wouldn't worry about heal toe just yet. There is a lot more to learn before that becomes neccesary. I never have even tried to use it yet and I do pretty good.
The best book I have read so far is going faster. its the book used by the skip barber school. I have read secrets of solo2 also. its decent but nowhere near as indepth as going faster.

ditto!... my cousin showed me and i just tried it one day and it's kind of hard to get use to but it gets easier after time

Don't get discouraged at first, it takes a lot of practice and a lot of getting used to. Practice it whenever you're driving, not just at the track. In fact, the track may NOT be the place to practice, as that might screw you up coming into a turn.

Have any of you ever checked out the Gran Turismo 3 manual...sounds stupid I know. But it has some excerpts from Skip Barber, It talks about the Traction compromise/Apexing..

Just because I'm a newbe to this forum doesn't mean I don't have backroad & course experience. I understand the concept of heel and toe completely, I just figured a little reading never hurt nobody. MEAT!
hey newb, what ryan said was all good advice. and we dont talk about "back roading" here. and i dont believe ive ever saw you at an scca autox anyway.
I take my car out on some rural roads and practice it in a straight line (from 4th to 3rd) when no one's behind me. I must say, I've been getting a LOT better at it, even with the "stock" pedal layout. Not sure I'd necessarily try on a racetrack just yet.

Honestly I do appreciate all input, and I haven't attented any scca event, but I'm interested in starting. I used to run with the checkered flag team (a friend was a member) at Thunder hill, excuse me for the "backroading" comment I didn't know you guys frowned apon that sort of thing, I thought gripping was gripping. It's a shame too, cause we are in the same area and I'd love another crx on the tour, too bad. No need to be rude, I was just ******* around, I don't think 1000 post makes you that ****** special.

yup i think all the gran turismo books has performance driving tips in there... they talk a lot about apex and etc... i heel and toe in GT ^_^... brake, gas, downshift
i usually practice heel n toe on off ramp or on ramps going onto or off of the freeway since your pretty much at high speeds... good luck

Ok...you completely lost me. Granted grand Turismo is a great simulator...I think everyone here is a little past Apexing a turn. I think I'm gonna just buy one of the books YodaIsGod recomment, thanks for the input brother, I appeciate it!
couple suggestions for posting on web boards.
1) find out who is a respected member of the forum and listen to what they say. don't be a smart *** when they correct you.
2) read the forums FAQ or Sticky. if you had, you would've known that we frown on "back roads" driving
3) ignore post counts. they mean nothing.
4) of the broad spectrum of driving skills available, heel & toe only carries about 5%of the importance. the biggest one is braking, something that even experienced autocrossers and roadracers work on continually. a n00b shouldn't concern themselves with a 5% item when it interferes with them learning a 70% item.
5) if you _really_ want to learn how to heal & toe, buy an 81 amc spirit that has no choke. you'll learn, or you'll walk.

Just curious, what would heel-toeing have to do with keeping the car running? Does it crap out in corners if you downshift without giving it gas? I'm speaking only of the AMC here.

My guess is he is referring to keeping your foot on throttle while holding the brake at a light (or something like that). Key terms there are "my guess"

That still puzzles me, I'm used to the choke being used only to get the car started, then after it's running and idling ok, the choke is "turned off" or closed or whatever. Maybe I'm just used to old British roadsters though...
http://www.turnfast.com/ is also a pretty good site for driving info.

Do you know anything about the "Traction Compromise" or "traction circle", that has been the biggest help to me so far in autox and also real world driving.

I have a copy of Speed Secrets : Proffesional Road Racing Techniques, that I picked a couple of years ago at B@N and of all the reading material my friends and visitors seem to pick up and relate to the topics and explanations better than any thing else
BTW the book is by Ross Bentley
