When removing axles, do I NEED to drain tranny fluid?
if you raise the rear and drop the front a bit (when on jackstands) all the fluid will sit in the front of the tranny away from the axles. you just need to get the cars *** in the air.
I've never drained the tranny fluid when removing the axles on my 1990 CRX. I've never dropped a bit of oil from the tranny when doing it either. Maybe it's different with other vehicles.
Same. I just yoink the axles, and it hasn't made a mess. I don't jack the rear up; I jack the front up because that's the end that needs work
. Why would you pull the axle out of the intermediate shaft anyway? The shaft is still plugging the hole on the tranny

It hasn't leaked yet
I find that pulling the intermediate shaft makes it leak, but the passenger side hasn't leaked... not sure why.

You could do one side at a time, and do it the ghetto fab way, and not hope you dont spill any fluid.
Or you could do it the right way and drain the fluid, and the take the axels out.... its totally up to you. You will need 3 quarts from honda or another MTF will do.
If your going to sepetate the axel from teh intermediate shaft, just take the whole axel out, and then put it on a table and put a large socket inbetween the intermediate shaft and the half-shaft, and hit it with a hammer, it will pry the 2 apart.
And when you take them out make sure the set ring comes out with the spindled end as well, if you forget to take it out the other axel will not sit properly and you will leak tranny fluid.
