the last time I changed axles in my Civic, I didn't lose any fluid when removing the axles from the tranny. I had the car level on jackstands, instead of the normal raise the front only.

You don't have to drain it per-se, but I always loose fluid when I pull the axels out of the tranny, so you should have an extra quart or two handy.

SOHC or DOHC motor?

If it's SOHC then yes you should drain the tranny.

If it's DOHC then only drain if you're pulling out the passenger side axles.

I can't believe that you guys are telling him not to drain! If you guys didn't spill fluid everywhere then you were low on tranny fluid, because the fill hole is up higher than the differential and you fill up the tranny until fluid runs out of the fill hole.

Tom that's not true. I just changed my axles, and checked the fluid. The oil level was fine, and I didn't loose any oil. It's all in how you jack the car up my friend.

please remember to change the oil seals as well when you pull out the axels. they're cheap and keep your tranny oil in the tranny.

yeah he is 100% right. I just changed my axles, and now the seals are bad and leaking oil. Now I get to spend another 2 hours of my Saturday changing that **** out!

Question:

How much fluid are you guys putting in the tranny?

If you're going to change oil seals than why half-*** it and not change the fluid out either?

I can play that game too you know!

well you are right about that. if you have to change the seals, then you have to change the oil. now i gotta go redo that whole procedure because i didtn change the seals. damn

JUST INSPECT THE SEALS BEFORE DECIDING ON CHANGING THEM.

to tom for being a big string of **** beads!

I would recommend doing it. I did when I changed my driver’s side axel this summer.
I'm getting ready to do the passenger side now since my boot is now torn there too.

Where is the Oil seals at and how hard are they to change?
Didn't know I had to change those too.
Oh and have some of your preferred Oil (MT) for your transmission ready too just incase.
I’ve been using AMSOil synthetic 10W40. I might change to Honda MTF if I can find some.
Good luck

You don't have to change the oil but it couldn't hurt.

I say change em anywayz cuz you cant really see tiny rips and they aren't that durable. like i said its easy to do while the axles are off and cheap.

better than having to do it AFTER the axles are back on.

I always change any hard to reach seal when i can. ESP since my motor is used.
