Default VTEC not kicking in??

I bought a Apexi vtec controller as you may have seen in other posts, and i was wondering does the controller over ride the stock vtec. should i still be hearing it, and then i tuned it a bit and i heard no sort of change at my vtec engagement point, whats going on??

like people said in your other post take it to get it tuned because if you dont know what you're doing its going to mess something up which it sounds like you did. take it to a dyno and have someone tune the biotch

Maybe you have the wiring to the vtec solenoid messed up. The power will be more gradual if you dropped the vtec engagement point, but you should still hear it kick in. My most gains are between 3-4g rpms with my vafc. My vtec point is 4900 with a fuel ratio at -3% throughout. My only mods are AEM short ram and iridium plugs. No I haven't had it tuned yet but I just put it a couple days ago. So far so good!

well, when you lower your vtec engagement point, you lower to a point where power starts to drop. therefore, you're continuously making power. and when/if you set it at the right point you should really 'hear' or 'feel' the vtec engagement.

If you haven't had it dyno-tuned yet, how do you know what kind of gains you're getting? 2nd, -3% fuel enrichment throughout partial and WOT on the high and low cam settings, where did you get the idea to use those settings? So far so good because the car is still running?!?

I had a set, and my butt-dyno said they gave me about the same net whp that changing to black chrome 'H' badges did. The money was worth it though, just to hear the knowing chuckle of imaginary respect from people when I told them that I'd bought them. I swapped them for Rocket's ef-1's, a cheaper set of over-priced plugs.

I don't have V-AFC, but had a VTEC engagement problem with a loose VTEC solenoid wire.

Let me clarify myself. My most obvious/noticable difference was before up to 4g RPMS. Like I said I haven't had it tuned and I've read many places that leaning it out across the board a couple % is a good initial setting until tuning. I guess you have heard differently. I'm sorry I upset you.

yeah i'm taking it to they dyno on tues. Right now i basically have it set for +5% fuel between 5k to 8k for high cam, that pretty much gets it back up to stock vtec power

That's what we like to call a "butt-dyno" which is just about as accurate as a divining rod. There are some butt-tuners around as well, some that seemed to have achieved some success doing it. Would I recommend it? NO.

No, actually I heard the same thing a couple of times on a few different boards, but when I asked the vets here, talked to a few techs I know, and looked at the a/f on some dynos, I saw that it just wasn't the case.

OT, but: You know the funny thing about info on m-boards is that a lot of the popular rumors may have all started in the same place. It's kinda like ok, let's say that you, just for example, say something here that you'd heard as if it were fact, and someone who doesn't know any better takes that information and repeats it at say Clubsi, again as if it were fact, and someone there reads it and posts in a topic on PO.com as being gospel.

Ok now, I'm a newbie and when I go looking around for those V-AFC settings I see the same erroneous information on several different forums and take that to mean that it's correct. See my point?

You didn't upset me, what would have upset me is if you'd damaged your engine listening to some regurgitated nonsense. It was advice that may have sounded like a flame, sorry about that.

Anyway, some people say that you can't **** up your engine with a V-AFC, but the certified Honda tech at the shop I go to says that you can, anything from a CEL to detonation can occur from improper settings. At the very least, you won't really get your money's worth unless you actually dyno-tune it.

Very few people know that A'PEXi amost stopped production of the V-AFC, or atleast sales to the general public, because too many people ruined their engines by not using it correctly.

Well Final Flash, you have many good points. My main recommendation/suggestion was to check the vtec solenoid wiring. Other than that, I was trying to explain how one might not feel the vtec KICK that we are all very used to. I agree with EVERYONE and eventually I will make it to a dyno when I am done with mods, until then my vafc will be set conservatively.
