Default auto insurance "eye-opener"!

As many of you know, we recently sold our 2000 PY R. After much deliberation, we decided to buy a 2001 Accord EX-L Sunday. After removing the R and applying the Accord to our insurance (Progressive), it decreased by a whopping $1,632/year!!! The car does have side airbags, in addition to the driver and passenger. Just wanted to share this info as the amount was a shocker to me. I knew it would go down, but that much?!?! Just wanted to post this info as I know some have been curious about the R's impact on an insurance policy.

Just curious, how much were you paying a month? Mines $100/month.

Jason - Just an fyi, and your insurance savings indicates this, Progressive has terrible rates in NC. I think I got a quote from them that was somewhere in the neighborhood of FOUR TIMES my current rates on my fleet.

You and Tammy both have clean records? No points? You should call my moms and see if she can save you any cash with State Farm.

JonD-

$460.75/month for full coverage with $250 deductible on both Rs. (2000 & 2001)
$324.75/month for same coverage on the 2001 R and 2001 Accord EX-L.

Both Tammy and I have 2 tickets, which definitely doesn't help

Pat~

Thanks for the offer! Could you either e-mail or IM me your Mom's number? I'll give her a ring today! Thanks

Actually thanks to Yoshi, I have decided to switch to AAA as well. An agent from AAA is coming to my office and take care of the paper work tomorrow. Recently, we have 4 cars insured with Farmers and the annual cost for all 4 is $2750 (we also have a 2000 Accord EX-V6). Now with AAA, my annual dropped to $1945. That's an $800 saving. And I will continue to get a 8% divident each year for staying with AAA.

Randy- who should split the $800 saving with Yoshi so his wish can come true..

My insurance on my 98 GSR was 178 a month. After I totaled it and got a new 01 ITR, my insurance is now 199 a month. Not to bad.

Yeah, but you're old! Seriously though, Tammy is 27, while I haven't broken the 25 year threshold (24). It's been advised our insurance should literally cut in half when I turn 25, which is also when 1 of my tickets and both of Tammy's should vanish

Aight - here's the monthly breakdown for my fleet:

2000 Type R - full coverage, $250 deduct. on collision, listed as pleasure vehicle: $80.82

1976 Scout II - full coverage - collison. increased towing expense, also pleasure vehicle: $23.65

1983 Volvo 245 DL - same coverage as Scout, except listed as primary driver (10 miles or less each way to work): $27.32

Keep in mind that I have airbag discounts (applies to Type R), accident-free discount (applies to all), and multi-line discount (applies to all).

Best things I've done? Take out another line of coverage (renter's and life ins. in my case) and list another vehicle on the same policy. Those discouts are rather deep.

[edit] More info - I'm 26, single, no points on license. No tickets ever, knock on wood!! [/edit]

What exactly are the stipulations of designating a "pleasure vehicle"?

Pleasure vehicle = non-daily-driver. Mom will explain all that when you call her. They have categories for types of driving you do. The Volvo is listed as primary driver, 10 miles or less each way to work or school. Theoretically, a "pleasure vehicle" will have less exposure to bad things, so rates are less.

Keith-

We knew we wanted a Honda, just weren't sure what to get. We test drove the Civic...too small. After driving the Accord, being offered a great deal, and the Honda APR clearance figures, we couldn't refuse. There's plenty of room, while the car is surprisingly agile for its size. We too thought about the CL/TL, but didn't want to spend the extra dough. We're both extremely happy with the decision. BTW, what's up with the Melting Pot? Maybe you'll get to see it one day Also, we have family in Maryland and Florida. Having to drive an R everytime wasn't exactly "mind-easing".

my policy with progressive 'renews' (if i choose to renew it) in september, and they just sent me the first bill today - it went UP $30/month (to $2700/year), and i have no idea why! i haven't gotten a ticket or anything since my policy renewed last year, and i certainly haven't gotten any younger!

they'll be getting a call from me when i get home this afternoon, and if they don't drop my rates to at least what they were last year, i will be switching to someone else...

Rates fluctuate, some more so than others. My parents (Mom is the SF agent, Dad is licensed as well and works in her office) have told me many stories of policyholders affected by Progressive and GEICO in that same way - massive rate changes without clear reason.

Mine usually changes a couple dollars one way or another at renewal, but I make so many changes to my policies, it's hard to keep up

Allow me to throw the first wrench

Unfortunately I'm booked for the next two weekends. This weekend I'll be in FL, and next weekend is the Atlanta meet. Any other weekend other than NOPI is cool with me
