Better for what? Be more specific; here are some gear ratios and speeds just to give you an idea of the gearing:

here is the tranny gig ranking from lowest to highest gearing

ys1 jdm (lsd opt) and usdm ys1 (gs-r) lowest geared trannies for a b series cable, 4.40 fd
J1/s1 (jdm only) similiar gearing also with a 4.40 fd (like a ctr or itr tranny)
y1 (lsd opt), (jdm only) geared like a gsr 4,26 fd
ys1 usdm ls, poop, gearing is shitty, 105 in 3rd on a b16a, only 92-93
a1/s1 usdm only found in 90-91 teg ls, also crappy gearing

i personally love the y1 because it nice gears but ok on the highway, the s1 and j1 are quick but suck at 75mph for gas, i had a usdm y21 with my swap and i hated it in the 1/4 i would spin 2nd gear and shift to 3rd at 8k and fall out of vtec as soon as the tires grabbed (damb it slowed me down)

to solve the problem of the short 5th on a jdm s1/j1, all that you need to do is take the 5th gears off an ls transmission and swap them over to the s1/j1. Its the best of both worlds.
