EK CIVC EX KEYLESS ENTRY
I just bought a keyless remote off Ebay. Same as the one I got with my 96 civic EX. Problem is I need it programmed. I have how to program it with the stock radio installed but the stock radio is long gone. Anyone know how else to get a keyless remote programmed other than going to Honda?
what you have to do is get a hold of the stock head and then bury the thing in your dash, you can splice it in with an extra harness. I just did mine about 2 weeks ago.
The honda remote will not work without the head unit wired into the car, it is the reciever.

I have one keyless remote now and it works, I have just bought a second one and needs it programmed. So do you think I still need to bury the head unit. Please help further.
Supposedly all you have to do to program it is turn the ignition on and off and press the lock/unlock buttons. I havn't tried this my self but thats what I was told to do when I got a new remote. I decided to just go aftermarket with the Viper 790xv. Hope this helps you
Also my keyless entry worked when I didn't have the factory Head Unit installed. I'm not sure if this really has anything to do with it or not.

ah, you have a 2000 civic? that is your reason then, only the 96-98 ones have to have the head buried in the dash. (looked at your screen name)
not sure what you need to do to reprogram it though.

That procedure will work on 99-00 Civic EX/SI but not 96-98. On those you must have the factory headunit and incorprate the "button" on between the AM/FM and CD/TAPE buttons.
Okay it is a 96, so basically I have to have the stock head unit to reprogram my second remote. I have one remote that works unlocking/locking the car. So I'll prolly have to go to Honda to have the second one programmed?
You can go to the dealer or do it yourself:
for 96-98
1 Insert ignition key into ignition
2 Turn ignition switch to on
3 Within 10 seconds, press and hold the valet switch for at least 5 sec (button between AM/FM and CD/TAPE) You will hear the sound of the actuators turning to UNLOCK
4 Within 10 seconds, press one of the transmitter buttons. You will hear the actuators turning to UNLOCK
(optional) Repeat step 4 for additional remotes
5 Turn ignition to off position
Test remote(s)

thats not working. need some help with this, i got a used honda civic radio, and i need to reprogram the remote. the radio works, but the keyless doesnt. i tried the above for hte 96-98 i get to the valet button, push it for 5+ secs and it unlocks the doors, but when i press and hold a button on the remote they arent trying to unlock. help!
Please help me...I own a 97 Civic HX and I installed a Pioneer head unit yesterday and now I lost my keyless entry and my door lights when you open the doors. Theirs a extra green harness I didnt have a new harness to plug into the head unit is that why they dont work and if so can I buy a new harness for it...if thats not it whats what do I have to do...
I've never done it myself, but i have read that you need to hide away the module within your stock radio (so that its plugged into the "extra" harness). I am not sure if you can remove it from the stock radio..

speaking of 96-98 remotes, is the remote for the oem alarm different from the remote for just the keyless entry? my dad bought a 96 ex from auction. it has a honda alarm sticker on the window, and it has the module on the radio for the keyless entry. obviously he didn't get the remote with it, so i was wondering if he should just get a normal keyless entry remote or an alarm/keyless entry remote if there's such a thing. i'm kinda confused...

I have instructions (from Honda) on how to remedy this situation at home. I followed them and it works like a champ. I will post when I get home from work.

OK dude...I read this post and it isn't making much sense...
If your car is 96-98 there is no "module" on the radio, it is built in. The alarm requires a module to be added. Anyway, you have to have a headunit from a 96-98...any old honda headunit will not work.
First the no keyless entry button will work, programmed or not, if you don't have the factory radio installed. They make a special harness that allowes you to add an aftermarket headunit whil keeping power to your factory one. I, and most everyone that does this, shoved the factory headunit in the space behind the acc. power outlet/cupholders. Therefore, if you have a button that works, you have a factory headunit somewhere in your car.
It sounds like you almost got it working if you heard the doos lock after pressing the valet button. However, you said you "held" the remote button. You just need to push the button not push and hold.
If it still doesnt work make sure the battery in the remote is not dead/missing.
Good luck
