I am friends with 2 guys that use 2500HDs to tow, and they love 'em. I couldn't tell you about mileage or problems, but I would be happy to give you their email addresses if you want to ask. IM me if you're interested.

I have a '99 1500 with the 5.3L, 4x4 with 3.73, ext cab, short bed.
The 5.3 and 6.0 are similar engines - both small-block Chevy motors, similar to the current LS1. I think both use the same 4 speed 4L60E transmission (if it's not a 4L60E, it's whatever the current generation of the same tranny is labeled). The tranny is the weak point in the drivetrain, though it is not a problem if looked after properly.
My gas mileage is tolerable, but far from good. I get about 15mpg, mixed use, but mostly highway. The 6.0L 2500HD will get a bit less, I'd guess 13 under similar conditions.
The truck pulls my open trailer and RX-7 at 65mph no problem. The trailer+car+gear weighs somewhere between 4500 and 5000lbs. The tow/haul mode on the transmission seems to do it's job as advertised - quick, crisp shifts and a higher shift-point than normal operation.
My biggest complaint so far is the interior plastic - it just looks plasticy. It hasn't cracked or anything, it could just look and feel a bit better. But the seats are top notch (get the power buckets if you can). The cab is roomy, the rear seat in the ext cab can fit adults.
Problems I've had (both of which are common problems):
1. Squeaky slip yoke on the driveshaft. Fixed by Chevy no charge (it was a TSB item, though the dealer will likely whine about doing it). Not a show-stopper, just an annoying squeak when pulling away from a light or braking heavily (as axle shifts).
2. Bad fuel level sending unit. Fixed under my extended warranty. The guage had erratic readings because there is a buffer in the ECU that tries to account for sloshing in the tank - made the problem hard to diagnose (for the 18 year old jackass at the dealer, I knew what it was immediately).
GMC has a little-known policy of fixing major drivetrain problems up to 50k miles. But you'll have to go over the head of your local dealer's service manager to get it. So a little birdie told me anyways.
When I bought mine this past March (with 48k miles), I opted for an ext warranty because of the 4x4. Just seemed like a wise thing to do.
Overall GMC seems to score average for full size trucks in JD Powers ratings.

thanks very helpfull
thats no to bad mialge, he caluclated his milage at like 9mpg with the jeep (not a stock motor ) so anyhting is gonna be an improvement.
ahh tranny, as in regular fluid and filter change, i think the 2500 has a trans cooler too so that should help.
Going to test drive it wednesday so i'll make sure to check out the squeeky driveshaft and fuel gauge.
had a look at the truck saturday and there are minimal scratches, no dents, not even scuff markes in the bed liner, alhotugh the interior was a bit dirty. Doesn;t look like the truck led a hard life. Unlike other 2500s i ahve seen

Yeah, regular maintenance, flushed yearly, etc. I think the HD has a trans temp guage - if not, swap in a Denali or Escalade dash cluster (the 1500 doesn't have one, so some poeple do the swap).

Totalling the jeep was the best thing you could have done for your racecar. It deserves to be pulled by a vehicle capable of towing it.
I'm glad you're okay.
If he is worried about milage, he could always go for a Tahoe. We tow with a friends Tahoe, and its excellent

He thought about the Tahoe, but not what he needs right now
His jeep was going into the trader this week, and he was gonna get a 3500 Dodge with the Cummins, but insurance too much for that now

At work I tow a 11,000lb water trailer with an 02' Chevy 6.0L 2500 HD. It tows that trailer without breaking a sweat. It's a great truck and a huge improvement over our old 98' 5.7L 2500 trucks. It rides so much smoother and seems to pull a whole lot stronger. On the other hand though, the gas mileage on the 6.0L motor isn't so great. Also, the interior is all plastic and rubber (but it's a work truck, who cares). Overall, the 6.0L 2500 HD trucks are great for towing. Not only can they pull real well, but they have the breaking power to stop when you're pulling that much weight.
