Some would say, this is bad for your turbo
I don't know if anyone else out there with a standalone has ever had problems with start up (I usually don't anymore, I thougth I tuned all that out) but there's been a couple times when I went to start my car on cold start, and maybe I'm just not leaving the starter long enough to crank the car, but the engine seems to catch a bit, but it doesen't turn over. It'll go through a couple cycles with it just barely turning, but I look over to my boost gauge, and I see it just spiking, 6psi here, 10 here, I even saw 15 once! and that's with barely any cranking. Anything like that happen to anyone else?
How much time do you give my turbo before it needs a rebuild?

is it an electronic gauge? If it is it may be the electricity spiking during crank up. I dont think that your turbo can make 15 psi with just the starter motor.

no, its mechanical. when I first saw it I too didn't believe it, but I guess anything is possible...
It wasn't the starter motor, the starter was disengaged, but I'm assuming that since the engine is still fairly rich at crank, all the extra fuel kept it going. It was like a sputtering, between having the engine stopped and idling normal...its tough to explain.

If you are experiencing this phenomenon, it is because of the poorly tuned condition the engine was in.
You said it was having trouble starting, and it would kind of continue after cranking, right? Typically, this is from improper fuel and igntion timing during start-up. When the engine doesn't get exactly what it wants, it will sometimes ignite the mixtures at the wrong time, which causes the engine to "run on", essentially, this is a mild backfire that is happening inside the intake manifold.
Since the gauge reads manifold pressure, it sometimes "sees" the backfire and reads it as high pressure {or boost} in the manifold.
I assume that once you tuned out the starting problem the fake boost went away?
