I'm getting ready to do that very soon (like within the next few days, just need 1 more part) I have a very rough 91 Si. It all depends on how "nice" you want it to look man. It's all up to you. Me, I'm taking out all my lights (headlights, tail lights etc..) reflectors, signals blah blah, taping the windows then spraying it. But, before I even get to that step, I've sanded all of the scratches so everything is nice and smooth, gotten rid of all surface rust, pounded (smoothed) out/in all dents to the best of my ability (I have no clue as to what I am doing), going over the whole car with steel wool (fine grade), wiping all the steel wool fragments off of the car, wipe the car down with bug/tar remover, and then finally primering it. It won't get shot with real paint for quite a while... I have some other mechanical things I want to do to it before I get it shot. so yeah, it's up to you...

All the money you will spend on spray cans for it to look like **** you'd be better off getting the ambassador special at Macco. It will look alot better than spray paint. If you still decide to do spray paint here are some tips. Try to apply wet on wet. Not to wet so you run it but enough so you won't end up w/ "tiger stripes". Also try to do it in a cool place out of the sunlight. Again, this will help avoid "tiger stripes" and "dry spray". When fully cured you could hit w/ a high speed buffer alittle to shine it up. I still dis agree w/ a spray can paint job but do what makes you happy.

Spray paint is not going to turn out very well. Do it right the first time. Going back and having to remove the spray paint to do the real job will be a major PITA. A base/clearcoat would be the way to go. I have been working on my paint job for a few weeks. My 1st paint job and its turning out to be very good. Don't get a maco special. The paint they use is super shitty. It will last a year if your lucky. I have 2 teaser pics. The clear has to be wet sanded with 2000 grit and cleared again. I spent maybe $450 for all suplies to paint my car (paint gun, primer, hardener, paint, reducer, catalyst, clear, thinner, da sander, sand paper). Thats not bad considering they charge several grand for a job like this. Spray can paint job =

hes not talking about spray painting his car a color hes talking about spray painting it primer grey

wich he could just tape off the car, sand it down with 400 and then get a primer gun, primer, and a compressor and do it the right way

who invited the ricers to honda-tech.

I've seen a rattle can job that you would never be able to tell the difference, everything is in the prep work and how you finish it. Get a really good buffing compound. The only downside is that rattle can paint isn't very strong and chips/scratches easily. I think he said all the cans of primer/base/clear cost about $120.00. We just painted another car the right way last week, I have to say it is definitly worth the extra money. Supplies cost about $350, but the finished product was amazing. That was a CRX painted Uranium Green with Gold pearl added.

First of all, try reading his post. He is talking about painting his car w/ spray paint. Second of all priming over a base/clear paint job is not always neccesary. It all depends how bad it is.
I also only suggested Macco b/c it IS better than a spray can paint job, and he is obviously looking to this on a very strict budget. I don't know where you guys are buying your products but I am a profesional and can't buy all the materials and tools to do a QUALITY paint job for anywhere near less than a grand. Personally, I do think do it right the first time but 50% of people don't see it that way or know how.

It is best to do it right the first time around, when it comes time when you have enough cash to have a real piant job done you going to regret ever rattle canning you car. Could cost you more in the long run.

Most rattle can paints and primers consist of an enamal base paint, you'll find that most automotive paints and primers are a acrilic or laquer base. There is an adheriance problem between the acrilic, laquer base paints and enamal. The paint shop would have to remove all enamal before putting any type of top coat on.

My advice to you is to wait and do it right the first time, I would rather know that your driving around a beat up car because your saving up for a good paint job than see it deystroyed by a $25 rattle can job just to make it by.

Less than a grand? How not? Granted we had a gun already, and sand paper, we bought all PPG paint, and had to buy extra rubberizer and sealer for the body kit. We still ended up at around $400.

Precisely, I'm just doing as much of the prep work as I can. If I'm lucky, the paint job will turn out great.

First of all, how long has it been since it was painted? Secondly, zoom in a little closer on that shot. The guy I got my car got a similar paint job,(similar color too) from maaco. Id say it takes about a year to notice their defects.......

bleh. If you took my civic and put it next to the VERY BEST rattlecan job in the world there would be no question which one was done right. Sure you can rattlecan and have it look 3/4-assed instead of half-assed, but don't fool yourself. A paintjob requires primer sealer, primer surfacer, basecoat and topcoat, not some rattlecan primer and rattlecan paint/clear.

Like I said, I'm just doing as much prep as I can do, and letting the shop take care of the rest.

Doing your own prep can save you some money and the paint will stay longer and look nicer on the car.

One, i'm not a guy, but it's all good, two, i need a paint job i don't want to go macco style and i would love to do it myself, i just need to know how and if that a bad idea, i don't really want to do it rattle can style but i'm not quite sure of any other better "do it your self" way...all i want is to, if at all possible, do my own job...how ever it is to be done...so...how ...is the question...sorry bout' the confusion.

as far as everybody complaining about maaco, you can get a decent job done by them however you have to do it right,

you need to do some prep to your car such as wetsanding, i would wet sand the entire car, 2nd buy your own paint from a good paint company like ppg and then take the car and the paint to them, if you dont want overspray on important parts then tape them up yourself or remove the items (taillights, plastic peices etc...)

and then let the manager know that you are a ***** and expect a good job. i had a freind get a maaco job done using the methods i listed and he has one of the nicest paint jobs ive seen in along time, the main part is that he didnt cheap out on the paint, and that he did all the wetsanding on the car himself
