Default Changing oil? (go ahead, laugh...)

Hey, sorry, I'm not too mechanically inclined and I'm a newbie. I already searched, so no need to get mad, and I don't mind the laughs.

My dumbarse of a brother hasn't changed his oil in his Integra for almost 10k now and one of his friends it taking it on an extended trip tomorrow. I change the oil on my Durango all the time, but I noticed on the Integra the oil filter is horizontal. Is this going to dump oil all over the place when I unscrew it? Also, the car is lowered an inch and a halfish and I don't have any jackstands. Is it safe to have the car jacked up on one side with a wheel off the ground when I do this? One last question: is there anything special that I have to do other than drain the oil, change the filter, and our new oil in? (like a button somewhere that I need to reset)

Thanks for any help. I know it's not difficult, but I want to know before I start.

nothing special you have to do, theres a jack point in the front of the car but id get some cinder blocks or soemthing to hold it up...jacks are not meant to hold the car up for an extended period of time. and yes oil will leak out from the oil filter.

I don't have any cinder blocks lying around the house. is there anything else that could be used instead? also, will only having one side of the car jacked up be a problem, or do both sides need to be jacked up? thanks!

i think you can jack up just one side but youre going to have trouble getting to the oil filter w/only one side jacked up. if youre going to just use your jack...jack up just the front and have someone hold the jack so the pressure doesnt get released. but if you got anything solid that will hold that should be fine too.

Yes. Jack the car up, take off the wheel/tire, and slide the wheel/tire underneath the car body next to the jack. Don't lower it like you would with a jackstand, but it's a good just-in-case measure that will let you reach around under the car without worry.

I saw the service director at your local (excellent) Acura dealership do this a month ago at Road America...

thank's everyone! you've all been a huge help.

excellent dealership!?! I beg to differ. (service wise at least) My brother has had soo many problems with their service department. scratched wheels, they normally didn't even fix what the car was in for... once while towing his car (brake work) they backed it into another car... it's just a couple hundred miles out of warranty now. shucks.

oh, just a side note. we were on the waiting list for an MDX (for me) after waiting 6 months they said one more month. after a month and a half went by (they didn't call) one more month... after 9 months we said screw it, saved $10k and bought the Durango for $26.4k (almost fully loaded and no waiting)

Don't use cinder blocks, they are not safe. Use jack stands AND jack.

couldn't hurt to add about half a quart of ATF to the old oil and run the engine for about ten minutes or so...the detergents in the ATF are very good for cleaning deposits from overdue oil from engines...then do the oil change...not something that has to be done, but a good idea if you don't mind the extra little bit of work...I agree with gsrclan, don't use cinder blocks, get some jackstands...borrow some if you can or buy some cheap ones from AutoZone, I think they go for about $25 a piece there and will come in useful with later oil changes...

I have had outstanding service from them, over and over and over again. Their service department is as good as the best of the nine Chicago-area Acura dealers. And they really know how to track-prep cars, which nobody else does.

I suppose anybody can be unlucky and have a bad experience anywhere, but I think they're the best around...

I never said I don't know how to change oil. I'm just not familiar with Honda's, so that's why I ask. oh and everything went fine when I changed it this morning. the oil filter was a little bit of a pain to get off, but other than that it wasn't too bad. I just jacked up the car using the front mount point and crawled under. no blocks or anything like that

if you leave it long enough while it's draining out through the drain hole, no oil will come out when you remove the filter. careful though, there will still be oil inside the filter.

The car was tilted back on an angle from the jack so a lot of oil stayed in the filter. Not to mention the garage floor is on a decline as well...

Jack your car up on level ground. Better safe than sorry.

I would have to say having a car fall on top of you is a bad way to die.

It would be for a worthy cause.

Oh, by the way, the car runssoo much smoother now. There was a night and day difference. When I checked the oil on the dipstick before I changed it there wasn't even a drop on it. The Fram X2 filter and Quaker State oil did the car good.

tell your brother 20$ for an oil change is cheaper than a new motor.

I did. I wish I would have noticed sooner. He's not around too much so I don't really see his car or the miles on it too often.

It sucks to blow the motor over something as simple as low oil. trust me I know.

His excuse was "I don't have money" but last night he went out to dinner (somewhere really nice) with his freinds ($25 per person)

Within the last few months he lowerd the car (Ground Control), bought new wheels (Koing Verdict w/ Yokahama Paradas), new clutch (ACT HDSS) lightened flywheel (Clutchmasters), and soon Koni Yellows. No money my butt.
