Knocking, but not from the block, seemingly from the Tranny!!!!!!...?????
Well just like the title says, the knocking sounds very similar to rod knock but is not coming from the block, seemingly from the tranny??
B16 SiRII (hydro) ClutchSpecialties stage 1 and AASCO 9lb flywheel
symptoms:
after hard driving, at a stop knocking occurs. rev the engine and it follows, BUT... when i push in the clutch it goes away. after realsing the clutch it will sometimes come back and sometimes will not. Noise is best heard from tranny casing, near rear. Knocking does not occur (or possibly cannot be heard) while driving, hence in gear.
I have ruled out rod knock because of the clutch thing. i have also ruled out throw-out bearing because the noise response is opposite, it goes away when clutch is engaged.
I took it to a reputable japanese mechanic today and he says it could be the mainshaft bearing. I have found one thread in the archives where a guy pointed out the same symptons and suggested it was the mainshaft bearing but no confirmation of this being the problem?!?!?!!

My questions...
mainshaft bearing... yes/no???
how long do i have daily driving it (noticed it about two monthes ago)???
any preventive repair or maintnance that will help???
thanx in advance!!!

well no matter what it is you are gonna have to pull the transmission
the first thing that came to my mind was a loose spring on the clutch disk but it could very well be a mainshaft bearing.

check your plates. maybe one of the gears is loose and is grinding or sliping off another one.
Yep. Mainshaft Bearing... is your tranny leaking fluid? Mine did because some debris made a small hole in my trans.
You can drive it for a while (a few weeks) but it will start to get worse and your shifter will start popping itself out of gear...

Might be loose flywheel bolts. I had the problem, but it was more of a constant sound. Just a thought.

LoL.that would look funny watching your shifter move around by itself.
