Default 99 GSR Exhaust Raddle?? please help ASAP

ok. i bought this gsr about 3 months ago with 48k miles on it. I noticed that there was funny noise at 3500 rpm's. Now its got worse...so i took off the heat sheild around the cat thinking that would solve it, but it didnt. Now im thinking it might be the lower part of the factory header. Does anyone know what's going on with it. Its bout to drive me crazy cus when i shift there it is at 3k and 3500. hit me up.

The only real way to find out its to operate on the thing...make sure the exhaust system is secure...if it isnt just throw some aftermarket exhaust/piping/header...I'm not positive on what it could be though, could just be some bolts that need tightening...

Hope it helps

i bought a greddy sp exhaust and it still does it. We also looked all through the cat and my mechanic said it looked fine. So im guessing its the A pipe.

My 95 had an exhaust rattle too and after about a month of screwing with the exhaust I found out it wasn't the exhaust at all just sounded like it was. It turned out I had a loose bolt on my factory header and the washer behind it was vibrating around making the noise at around 3000-4000 rpm. Might want to check all your header bolts and washer even if you don't have a stock header. Also I hear that sometimes exhaust rattles come form inside the resonator, not sure how to fix or find out about that one though.

Thanks for the replys...i'll have to check out all those bolts around the header. I was thinking about just replacing my header to see if that solve the prob. Im lookin to buy a used to DC 4-1, if u know of any hit me up, i live in Charlotte NC.

On my '95 the A-pipe was a double-wall pipe. The inner one is attached at the front and as it flexed just a little, it buzzed against the outer pipe.

That pipe is really expensive, so it was an excuse to get a header...

Sorry, but it always erks me to hear people refer to "headers" as if we have more than one. Not tryin' to be an a$$, but it's "header".

Now, for the problem - Have you ever looked where the resonator/exhaust piping connect? My GReddy Power Extreme had the infamous rattling problem as well and after thoroughly searching all the bolts and heatshields, I finally discovered that my resonator had a small crack where it connects to the piping. I swapped out the GReddy resonator for another and "ta da" - no more rattle.

We had the same "rattle" in my wife's GS-R. Fixed it with a new header (not headers ). The dealer said it was the A-pipe and they wanted to rape us...never took it back to the dealer.

its the back heat shield not the front one. You have to take the manifold off to get to the back heat shield, because the block gets in the way.

Its the back heat shield on the header you will have to take the header off to get to it cause of the engine block. I had the same prob.

Please excuse my naughty ring finger..
BTW, "erk" is not a word, and "heatshield" is two words... that always bugged me..
