Default NON VTEC 2000 Civic EX??

Hi all,

I just bought a 2000 Civic EX (ABS, power everything, Cruise Control etc)
I bought it from a Honda dealer in Canada. I have heard that ALL EX's are
VTEC.

Buuuut, stamped on the engine is "16Y7" denoting that is NOT a vtec. Did I get ripped off or are there some 2000 Civic EX's that are not vtec?

Thanks in advance!!

stifferd.

in canada, the ex is the equivalent of the US lx or dx. thus, no vtec. you'd have to get a canadian si to get an US ex.

it depends on where you buy the EX from. or, someone did a swap.

Ahhhh,

ok much thanks guys.

Sooo can I expect ANY sort of equivalent performance gain from a non vtec engine if I improve it?
It's 106hp--what can I expect to get out of it with new headers exhaust (and anything else thats possible)

Will it EVER be as good as a vtec? Can I emulate a vtec?

Thanks guys!

yeah, 84.5mm bore. ^_____^

you can do a mini-me swap. do a search on mini me or mini-me. that way u can get vtec on ur motor.

btw, really consider a bore on ur engine...i've been trying to convince my roomate that a sohc 2.0L would be sick.

edit - last part, no u will not get any significant gains with I/H/E. Nothing that will boost you do 125hp, the USDM EX model.

Hrmm,

Interesting. So I can bore it to make it a 2.0L? Damn...
Im really new to this, thanks a bunch.

SO then, now I know for sure that it's an SOHC and not a DOHC too.
What about changing the camshaft, boring it and doing a mini me swap?

What sort of Hp could I expect from that?

Ok, if you plan on keeping your motor and not doing a swap, heres basically what you can do:

first thing your probly gonna do is get the usual intake, header, exhaust.
If you dont care much about your interior, strip out as much junk as you can: spare tire, jack, rear seats, etc. Keep your car as light as possible. At this point I'm gonna say you should be able to keep up with a stock EX, probly beat it if your a good driver.

Now if you want more power, cause the damn SI keeps handing you your ***, Its time to do some internal work. Look for a nice camshaft. A good cam should give you about 7-10 HP. After this get a cam gear, and maybe some pullys ( although some say it really doesnt do anything, all hype as far as the pullys go, but who knows). Get a chip for the car and get it to a professional shop and get it tuned.

The next step (actualy you can do this at any point, the sooner the better) get a nice suspension setup. Your suspension is gonna play a big role in the performance of the car.

At this point, you should be able to take a STOCK SI. But hey, dont get mad at me when the gsr is still walking all over you.
You should have a pretty good ride at this point, if you still want more power, look to forced induction. I'd suggest a turbo instead of a supercharger, but whatever you want.

ok I'm tired of typing, good luck with your car
