Will JDM B16 motor past smog with basic mods?
Your gonna have some problems with smog since this new dyno smog started on July 1st. I was luck enough to get my car illegally smogged on June 30! As long as your parts are 50 state legal and someone is easy on the visual you "might" be okay, but who can tell with this new smog crap in Cali.. Remember though a JDM motor isn't from the US so I don't think you can even make it legit, cause the rep can't trace the serial number to make sure it's not stolen. Hope I helped
i've heard really different stories on JDM motors. I recently read in Sport Compact that as long as the JDM has an equivalent here like a B18c1/GSR and it has all U.S. emissions stuff on it it will pass smog and referee. A B16a1 will not since it was never sold here. I'm trying to figure out how to swap a JDM B1bc5 type r motor into my crx and keep it legit. anybody else knows if the above is true?
you are right and wrong , a jdm motor can pass a ref if all us smog and intake and exhaust mainfolds are hook up, the crx can be reffed but must be wired up for obd1 and the the motor can be consider a us del sol b16 motor
talk to the smog ref inyour area, they'll tell you everything you need to know. i asked the smog ref here and he said as long as the engine has been released in the US then it will pass with all the emission equipment hooked up, ie. B16a, B18c, B18c5. sorry people no ZC or B16b. and it has to be same year or newer of your stock engine.
BTW, the b18c5 has to be wired OBD2, since that's what it is.

you took the words out of my mouth
btw it also depends on the smog ref too. some will fail you and some will pass you, it all depends on how the smog ref interpret the smog laws.

The engine codes you're stating are already USDM if they end with numbers.

If the motor is older than your car but the same version of that motor existed in the year of your vehicle and that version motor remained unchanged, then yes you can have a 92 engine in a 93 chassis.
