Remember that episode of Star Trek when the Enterprise encounters NOMAD - the probe that rebuilt with alien technology is out ridding the universe of biological infestation?

And NOMAD mistakes Captain Kirk for it's creator - some other guy named Kirk.

And NOMAD says at some point something like: "Creator - this unit functions erratically"?

There was something about Humans that NOMAD simply "did not get".

I wonder if there's a lesson in this episode of Star Trek for us here on H-T (I know, don't say it, just shut up).

It's like this - this board exists here on the screen in real time, but not just here. It also exists in the conciousness of each of us. When we logoff we leave something behind and take something with us. When we return we expect, need even, to find ourselves "back". When there's no back when we come back we got a problem.

When we come back to find a thread deleted, we are deprived of our "return" as it were. It is a shock and I say an injury.

Now NOMAD wouldn't see any problem with this - the Soul of Honda-Tech just wouldn't register. But for us, it's like the atomosphere we breathe. We take it for granted.

This is not an argument against rules or their enforcement. It's not an excuse for the tolerance of destructive behavior. It's just a suggestion that there's more to this community, literally, than meets the eye - and it's important.

Scott, who knows there's more to this than that but that's all I'm saying right now...because I haven't thought about it any more than that....not that I might not...I just haven't...I probably will, but you can never tell about these things...

To complete the circle of madness that started as H-T on the screen only and has now become a conscious and sub-conscious addiction to us all....

why not cybernetic-type chips where we can subconsciously (or consciously, both are scary ideas) talk to each other without the graphic interface known as H-T?? Imagine your head filled with H-T voices.... madness.

I mean, at least we'd be able to multi-task while we were enjoying H-T.

I do think some take this little forum way to serious. I enjoy H-T. I come here to read posts, laugh a some and chit-chat with racing buddies. Nothing more.

You missed some of the Borg getting upset about this whole Regression to the Mean thing - they misunderstood that they were on the end of the curve where the phenomenon was beneficial to them.

But then again, doesn't regressing toward the mean assume a standard normal distribution? Aren't we more likely here at H-T to have bi-modal or otherwise skewed distributions to complicate the analyses?

I believe the probe was named "V-GER" because the "oya" was covered with dust. (Originally a Voyager space probe)

Sometimes when I come to H-T, I feel the "V-ger needs the information." state of mind..

I am curious why threads are deleted... Some threads locked.. others deleted... some deleted after several pages.. I kinda think it's 1984-ish.. "That thread? What thread is that? That thread never existed.." rewrite the past..

Locking-- hey.. I see a need for it.. even though some instances I don't always agree with.. (I'm not ready to offer to take over for RJ, so I'm not gonna complain too loudly.. )
Deletion-- Maybe for porno postings or something, but just a contentious thread?

P.S.: H-T is more than just a message board, it is an online community. It is not unique in that regard -- there are and have been many such communities. But it does have that quality. Not all message boards do.
