What hubcentric rims do is they put the weight on your hubs instead of the lugs (lugcentric) it suppose to be a safer way of doing it. As for getting new rings I would highly recommend that you do but I would look into finding a set of metal ones cause the plastic ones are prone to break (as you already know) and melt as well.
I have been running Borbet type S rims without the ring for a while now. I have the rings, but the only porblem is that they are for a miata, not a crx. I will not be running like this for long, but you should be safe to go without them for a while
The only thing hubcentric rings do is help you initially seat the wheel on the hub before you tighten the lug nuts. Hubcentric rings do not support the wheel once you have tightened the lug nuts. I know some people here are going to argue this to death (it's been discussed in the racing/autocross forum). I don't run hubcentric rings and it makes no difference...
ive heard that the wheel can slide around if you dont use rings... and you can put unnecessary stress on the lug studs... do you have any explanation as to why it makes no difference if you dont use the rings?... ive been thinking about it myself and it really doesnt make any sense to me... if the wheel isnt centered correctly on the hub and say you hit a decent sized pothole, it seems like the wheel would move around

hub centric rings are used so that the wheel has a factory fit against the wheel hub. in some cases cars with hub centric rings ride a little better (highly doubtful). i'm in the tire business and i don't care for them personally. i was running 17's on my ef for a good amount of time and never had any problems what so ever with out them. if by chance you DO have hub centric rings...have the tire store that you go to keep them in the wheels when they balance them.....it might insure a better balance but then again some people are never happy.
hope this helps
