Default Tranny Fluid

Okay I am putting my tranny back in tonight and I want to know what some people's opinions are on the best fluid to use. synthetic motor oil?

I did a search but didn't come up with too much useful info.

Thanks

dont use synthetic motor oil, it is soo slippery imo - synchros will grind. If you want to use full synthetic, use redline mtl. or GM synchromesh, which is a synthetic blend.

I read about the synchromesh but where can you find it? Is it only at a GM dealer?

Cool. Thanks

So what makes Honda MTF better than synchromesh or normal engine oil??
I am kind of leaning towards the synchromesh because I have a slight synchro grin in 5th sometimes. I read one post where someone said they had a little worse of a grind and the synchromesh eliminated it??

I have read several places that the Redline basicly sucks after a little while, like it breaks down and some people say it's too thin.

Redline is snake oil aka bullshit. Everyone I've known to run it, end up w/ a grind.
Honda MTF is the most obvious choice, and it seems to be the best thing to put in your tranny. I've tried MTF and 10W 30 (in other cars), and I like the MTF, but if your tranny's syncros are on the worn side it will grind less with 10w30 or 10w40 regular motor oil, not synthetic. Overall, the MTF is nice stuff, worn/ trannys like the extra thickness of motor oil as their syncros arent that great. If your tranny is a jewel, go straight to MTF. One caution, if you use regular motor oil, you'll have to change it more often v. using MTF. I'd change it twice as often.

WHat seperates MTF from motor oil is the composition, and since it's proprietery all I can tell you is that there are additivies in MTF that are lacking in both motor oil, and other lubricants on the market.

MTF has specific anti-wear compounds for brass syncros; motor oil does not, but both fluids are otherwise identical besides this. You can run 10-30w if you have nothing else, but switch to a MTF at the first opportunity. Our transmissions take a GL4 fluid. Some MTFs such as Mobil1 synthetic MTF are GL5 and are not appropriate.

I had a lot of trouble putting the car into first gear, and 2nd, 3rd, and 5th would grind and/or be reluctant. All this by 18,000 miles. GM syncromesh helped me a lot - no more grinding and shift lever effort is much lower, and smoother. It's a much better fluid than honda MTF imo. The GM part number is 12345349. I needed 2.5qts to fill up my transmission. It has been in my car for 31,000 miles now with no problems.

I have been told that royal purple synthetic transmission fluid is very good, but I have no direct experience with it.

There is also an additive called syncroshift that works well.We took on old Nissan PU with like 200000 miles on it that was grinding in 2nd and 3rd,added new oil and syncroshift and no grindage.

I had my flywheel and lsd installed, so I asked about the tranny fluid. They (the shop) said put in Red Line. I said no, put in 10-30 motor oil. The synchros wouldn't work after the lsd intall from 3rd-2nd downshift, so I had 'em put in 10-30 motor oil. Still had grind from 1st-2nd, 3rd-2nd downshift (almost impossible), lots of grind, so replaced the synchros. After the synchro swap, no problems with the 10-30 motor oil. No grind whatsoever. Synthetic might not work, because the viscosity is less. The tranny (and lsd) would have to be shimmed and aligned perfectly to not have any problems with a low viscosity synthetic tranny fluid. Keep in mind I'm no expert. Just talking from my own experience.
