Default More on Jacks.

I know everyone here is always in search of a nice, cheap, portable (read: light) jack to take with them to the races and use at home. Although the HF jack usually fits the bill for most people, my college budget cant even accommodate the $150 price tag at the moment. Very sad I know. I was poking around on Sears.com and came across this Delco 2 1/2 ton jack with 5 1/4'' min height, and a max lift of 15 1/2''. Anyone have any experience with it? Worth $40?

Haven't used that one Jacob. But I do like the idea of the handle on the top for carrying. Since you're a "growing boy", you shouldn't have any problem ******** around a slightly heavy jack.

Here's my advice regarding jacks.....

1) NEVER work under the car without stands.
2) If YOU don't mind carrying around that jack, it's not too heavy.
3) NEVER get under the freakin car without stands.
4) Bleed/service/lube the jack so it works like it should from the start.
5) Practice with the thing a few times, (letting the car down from a lifted position),
before you take the car apart and lower it. Ie... jack it up and let it down a
few times on the front crossmember with the tires on the car. Nothing worse
than a jack that "surprises" you when you go to let it down. My HF jack is
nice, in that it's light/relatively cheap, but it's a bit touchy when you let it
down.
6) Resist the urge to just pop your head under the car "real quick" to look under
when the car is not on stands. You're head will get popped, which makes a
nasty mess under the car.

Stands..... HF usually carrys Lincoln brand stands CHEAP. (They're blue) Get a set of those, and the budget jack and you'll be 100% fine, as long as you USE the stands!

I have a Craftsman 2.5ton "high-lift" (up to 21 inches I think) that works well... though this is the third one because the first two didn't lift. Made in China, go figure...

Similar jacks (with the handle) can be had at Schucks or NAPA for $20.

This is what I use. It's light, cheap ($32), small, portable, and comes with a carrying case.

15 1/2 inches isn't all that high, and it might not even get your wheels off the ground if you jack up the rear from the tow hook.

i picked up a craftsman jack that's supposed to be for suv's, it's a heavy POS but it lifts almost 22 inches and fits under the front of my car if i drive up on 2x4's.

5 1/4 min prolly won't make the front side jack spots either, unless you're on blocks. i have a $20 one like that and it doesn't fit.

hth.

I couldn't agree more

*Shrugs* I just lug around my $100, 100lb crapsman floor jack. Works great and has the full sized cup

I've used those little jacks and don't like them. For quick, 1 corner at a time, tire changes and brake pad swaps it should work fine tho (when used with jack stands of course).

The hydraulic scissor jack above:

lifting range 4 3/4" - 15"

2,200 lbs. capacity

a little over 10 lbs

Perfectly interface with the lift points for Honda cars and lifts the EK (w/ stock suspension) off the gound over 4" inches.

My AC jack didn't come with instructions for maintenance. Anyone know of a write-up on how to service a jack?

Damn! My Craftsman 3 ton jack weighs 85 lbs. Kinda a pain to lug that down three flights of stairs to get to my car.

I think the height issue should be double checked before you purchase a jack. 15" sounds kinda low.

Me too. I have a very small, cheap hydraulic jack. It's perfect for me because I use mine mostly for changing wheels/tires, not for working on/under the car. It has to be small because my interior space is very limited. I have a two-seater car, so since I'm putting the track wheels/tires inside the car, along with my track gear and overnight bag, I don't have a lot of room for the jack. It has to fit on the floor of the passenger side with the seat moved full forward. Mine does.

I have the same jack, for the same reason. You cant use the stock jack points if you plan on slipping stands under those points. So you are forced to use the front cross member or tow hook or whatever. And you need something that lifts HIGH if you plan on getting those stands under. I don't know how you guys do it with those 14 or 15 inch lift jacks. My $20 special never gets use.

Dude...

Just got my new HF catalog. They've got a similar jack as follows:

Lot #: 36119
19-1/2 inch handle
Lifts from 5" to 15-1/4"
Size 21" x 9-1/2" x 6"
Capacity 4000 Lbs.

$15.97 (That'd fit ANY college students budget) Just go without PBR for a week or two..

Thanks for the heads up Brad. I think I am going to head to Costco to see if they still have that pimpy jack that was posted on here before,,, Costco will take that thing back as long as they are still in business! I had a laptop that was 8 months old that they took back because the battery didnt last! WTF, costco is amazing.
Anyways, if not I will just try a SUV jack from either Pep boys or Auto zone. Then one of these days I will be pimpin' a $600 Longacre jack to make up for all the abuse that I endured as a child!

While we are on tools here,, you guys gotta check this out! Im definately asking Santa for this bish this year.

Amazing... I seriously laughed my *** off when I saw this one.
