Stock B18C5 for Road Racing, is it Reliable?
I know this question might sound like it belongs in the Road Racing forum but I need to know from the owners. I blew up my race motor and need a motor ASAP to get back to the track. I was thinking of buying a Type R engine complete just to finish this season but need to know if it can handle the abuse in stock form. It will have fluidyne radiator and Fal Fan. Cooling is no problem.
Thanks
Jay

The B18c5 is a very capable engine and it will do fine. I am not sure what class you are running in but I think if you are running in a modified class then you will have to do some mods to it.

Yes, it is capable and can handle a good amount of abuse as long as it is maintained well.
Chris - who notes that he said 'abuse in stock form', so mods don't apply.

What I have in mind is running the motor completely stock internally, with bigger radiator, fans, and bolt ons. Maybe a ported intake. The transmission will have the ATS close gear ratio set. Do you think it can handle it? Running it at high RPMs for more than 30 minutes per race?
Thanks

I would add an oil cooler, baffled oil pan, appropriate gauges to monitor the situation and it should be fine...at least this is what I am doing for the build-up of my road race ITR.
dead reliable. just make sure your cooling and oiling system are working fine.
edit, for the oil pan, this is what we did.

All very good ideas.

If you want to be fast on a raod course learn to drive the car with teh engine stock.
You will be faster by investing money in HPDE's, tires, and brake/suspension upgrades, than you will by adding 20hp and 15tq.
A stock B18C5 with a "good" header (SMS) or not, and a clean air filter will be more than fast enough for anyone who isn't at an elite level, and doesn't have to make 200whp to hang with the pack.
Once you are being outdriven and overpowered than it is time to upgrade.... For most people that is hardly ever....
Things that win races, or drive consistant laps.

It sounds like jwaked is already familiar with racing - with two road-race specific vehicles in his "sig" and a couple karts as well.
Stock B18C5 + baffled pan = strong reliable power

I think he just wants to know about the reliability of the engine as a replacement to his engine for the remainder of the race season.

The b18c5 is at home on the track...a baffled oil pan is definetely good money spent, as well as gauges to monitor her while you rape her through the corners.
BimmerSteven and Chris N are right. I need to know if it can handle the rest of the season. I got the rest, just need and engine now that has some power and could handle the abuse.
Thanks

I, along with a few other ITR guys here in AZ, have done numerous HPDE's in the dead of summer, when it was 110 degrees outside. I have just bolt ons and no additions to the cooling systems and have never had any overheating problems at all.

I don't know where you live, but if it can survive a hot AZ day in June, it can handle just about anything.
I would doubtlessly trust a stock ITR engine to help you finish out your season.
my .02.

I would make sure to do the things david mentioned above. Especially the baffled oil pan. No one likes having vtec not engage until 7000+ rpm while turning or tracking out.
But YES, the B18C5 can handle the load for your race series.
Chris - who thinks read comprehension is bad in this thread.
