They are cooling fins and they are faced the right way it's just the way they took the picture. Remember the Honda engine sits hortizonal but in the pic it looks turned around only because its on engine stand for pictures.

The baffles are there to keep a good supply or oid on all the vital parts during high G corning and spinning engines between 8-12k all race long. It's hard to keep oil onto parts spinning that fast and also in high G corners. This oil pan is used in there N1 cars

That price is only for the girdle not the oil pan or the other way around. Anyways, oil pan and girdle are TWO SEPARATE items. Trust me, I have seen the Spoon catalog.

And you can't use another oil pan because those clever Spoon guys made sure part of the support for the block from girdle was built into the oil pan itself. Hence the two items are INSEPARABLE.

The Mugen baffled oil pan is in the $250 (or slightly less) range, and the R already has a partial "griddle".

Also remember that cooling fins do not need air flowing across them to be effective, although it helps. The fins create a larger surface area which dissipates heat better. Not trying to call anybody down, I just thought I'd add that.
