Default Friend looking to buy a used '00 S2k. Any known Problems?

I've been an Civic and Integra guy for many years, and have not really kept up on the S2000's. My friend asked me if I knew of any known problems.

A quick search through here showed some engine oil starvation issues, but nothing that really seemed re-occuring.

Any thoughts?

He's looking at a '00 with 18k, at a dealership with the Certified Pre-Owned stuff.

Thanks alot!

Ya, you really have to keep the plastic clean. I didn't like how small the glass window is though. Also 00-01 has had a known 2nd gear grinding problem, but it's not too horrible. The clips for the softtop to lock against the windsheild wear down really fast, and that creates a lot of wind noise. And after a few thousand miles the exhaust starts to buzz a bit, but I think I can probaly just tighten that back down.

Anyway, thats all I've noticed with mine.

I got this off of http://WWW.IN.HONDA.COM. Its a new website for the honda techs, these are the service news.
convertible top creaks, pops, and rattle the source is the mouting gets loose
there is a problem shifting into 5th or reverse(i think this is a recall)
spark plug gaskets go bad, causes misfire and mil light to come on
the immobilizer unit sometimes fails and car wont start
oil consumntion

these are just news articles of problems have happened, not all cars>>>>.!

Um, yea. I'll save you a lot of time and help you out with this. I had a 00 s2k #0699. Mine was one of the first ones in the southeast and because of that, I believe I paid a very high price. Well, lets just say after 4 transmissions, 4 clutches, a cracked flywheel, new top and window, new dash, and a dozen TSBs, it was time to sell the car. I would never touch another 00 s2k. Although, I would give anything for an 02. Trust me, stay away from 00s, 01s have about a 30% chance of getting a bad one (this stat is from people I personally know) and 02s are fairly decent (my roommate has one). just my .02. Brandon

the biggest problem is people wrecking them and then reselling them without disclosing this

Hey man sorry for the bad experience you had, but the 00-01 cars are not as bad as you make them seem. Most of them are great if you maintain them properly (fluid changes etc.) I'm not saying that you didn't do this by the way, but you probably just got a lemon. The engine lockup/oil starvation problem has happened on about 38 cars or so? (check s2ki out for the exact number but I know it is very low) There are a few quirks that the cars have, but I love my 00 s2k...no problems at 30K+ miles. So tell your friend to go for it if he can afford the maintenance costs that will be incurred if he uses it as a daily driver.

P.S. you may also tell him to make sure the dealer has addressed any and all recall or service issues

30 percent chance of getting a bad one out of the people you know or out of all the 00/01's made? if this were true honda would have recalled the whole car.....

you have about a .3 percent chance of getting a bad one. You figure 50 or so cars have been bad for one reason or another. Then take say 18000 cars minus the 50 and divide what you get by 18000 and that equals 99.7 percent good and .3 percent bad. There were more than 18000 cars delivered (10K a year I think) but I am using 18K just for the heck of it.

This is only taking in to account 00-01 models.

Coos, As honda master tech, do you really want to be troubleshooting rattles all day long and letting the general public come to your ASM and show them THEY know whats wrong with your car with out a trained technician knowing first?
