I recently bought a used 00 Civic and had it inspected by a mechanic who missed a large rust hole in the subframe that was caught yesterday by my mechanic on it's first oil change. Basically the vehicle is unsafe to drive and should not have passed the provincial safety inspection (it did, I have the certificate). I took it to the shop that did the safety cert and they seemed unsurprised, basically it's a scam. They were quick to suggest that they can fix it, presumably to avoid me reporting them and them possibly losing their provincial inspection license.

The shop suggested they can patch the hole by welding and bolting a metal piece. My question is, looking at the pictures below, does anybody believe that this can actually be done? I don't believe it because there is not a lot of good metal here to attach a weld to, and the rusted out part is a curved section. I feel like replacing the entire subframe is the best option.

Thanks for the feedback on replacing the subframe. I think I'll go this route.

Just called in to the ministry of transportation "enforcement unit" and submitted a report. They will send an inspector out to check out my car and if they find sufficient negligence they will suspend the garage's license and fine them. I'm hoping they also have some power to force them to pay for the repairs.

Don't hold your breath.

Was the purchase of the vehicle contingent on it passing the inspection? If not then ethically you would be hard pressed to have a case, since you would have needed to pay for the repairs anyway to make the vehicle road-worthy. You're just doing it after the fact, now.

That's sucks OP. I hope they get into trouble for that.

And I send out a prayer that no welded nuts get get spun while removing those sub frame bolts. Amen.
