four speed sport shift vs. five speed
i posted a question a few days ago about buying a 98 lud with the four speed ss. i asked what turbo is best fou hat car. the only answer i got was "you need to worry about getting a five speed" i am cofused about what tranny is the better one for racing. i need input to know wether i should get this lude or lok for a five speed lude. please help.>
5 speed, period. don't get the ss, tranny will fail with boost, those two don't get along well. I got a 97 ss, i am supercharging it, but i am doing this until the auto trans goes out on it, once this happens, i am doing a manual. But no turbo for me.
I hope this helps.

Definatly wait for a 5 speed. I've heard a lot of horror stories about some SS transmissions and I cant imagine how quick forced induction would eat one up.

weve got 2 guys on there with ss preludes, one JRSC, and the other DRAG turbo kit.
talk to someone who owns one
but the ss tranny will not deliver power to the wheels as well as the manual

SS preludes are a full second slower than 5spds (16.4 vs. 15.4) in the quarter mile. if you're going to dump all of this money (turbo)into your car, but have to make up a full 1s from the get go, you might as well wait for a 5spd. think about spending a good 6 or 7 thousand on a car to make it just as fast as someone who spend 2G on some bolt ons. Not to mention however much it's going to cost when you need to rebuild the SS tranny.
Sport shift is a joke. I know it's silly of me but i still laugh at ferraris with F1 paddle shifting. I don't like the CVT idea. I guess i just really love my clutch even though i ride the thing ALL DAY

well, a lot of people who own Ludes race (autox or drag or street) and so the 5spd setup is very important. I have a SS and its VERY convenient to say the least.. I live in Upstate NY and it snows like a bloated dog peein on christmas eve and so the roads get jammed and we usually end up crawling home every other day.. and its a bitch to shift every yard or so to get thru traffic. It is true that the Lude auto tranny isnt good, and even tho JR says it will hold their SC, I have heard multiple complaints about it. Baby the tranny and it will run fine..I use synthetic tranny fluid, change it every 15k miles and dont shift like I am catapulting into the world records. And start a small savings account for the 2500$ swap coming your way 5 years from now.

i trust my left foot in snow much more than i would an auto trans...
about "traffic": i guess i've always driven 5spds so i'm used to it. we'll see how i feel about it when i upgrade my clutch...

i understand the SS tranny is bad but how about a turbo set up on a 92-96 automatic, i have heard from a doemestic drag racer that automatic turbo setups are more effieciant than 5 spd. because the 5 spd has more of a chance of mis-shifting do to human error. The auto may not be as fast but is more reliable, so from what we discussed. Please correct me if I am wrong. can anyone verify this?
Thanks
Thanks
Automatics have an advantage over manual transmissions on turbo setups beacuse on an automatic, you never take your foot off of the gas, and the turbo stays spooled. If you had a strong, beefy auto tranny like a lot of RWD domestic cars have, auto is definately better for drag racing, esp with turbo.
With the POS that honda put on the 5th gens, the 5spd is the better choice.
Don't know much about 4th gen autos, but I imagine that they might not be up to it either (didn't they only come on 's' models w/ 130lb-ft of tq?)
