I have begun my install... Taking my time... **SAAB Viggen I/C Info Inside**
Well, I have started installing my turbo setup... I dont drive the car much, so I can afford the downtime... I have begun with the FMIC, then i'm making my i/c piping... I am building the kit myself, doing most of the welding myself...
For the i/c, i decided to go with the SAAB Viggen I/C that I picked up from SAAB for $150.04 brand new with the end tanks... The end tanks have to be modified. I will be doing that tomorrow... I'm either going to put 90 degree bends to point them outward or cut holes in the end tanks and mod it similar to how Starion i/c's get modded. I had to cut the grille out to make the i/c fit...
Now to the pics...
The I/C

The grille all cut out... Good thing a friend of mine who is one of the top stereo installers in the country stopped by... because my hands couldn't hold steady, and i didn't have the ***** to cut my bumper...

Semi-Installed I/C

I/C Installed

And just to be cool, here's my cell phone

Tomorrow the BOV flange gets mounted and I start cutting my i/c pipes to size... And probably do my intercooler end tanks and weld on some brackets...

the endtanks are plastic... I will probably use PVC 90 degree bends and JB Weld them... The piping isn't run yet... i'm waiting for it to arrive...

with the way they sell the SAABs these days the DIY turbo guys in 5 years wont have to DO SHIEEET!

the core of the i/c is about 20" x 6"
As far as getting it for $150, my girl's family owns mechanic shops and gets discounts...
hehehehehe...
Envision: Remember that not all saab's are this way... only the Viggens..
Here is some more info on the viggen i/c

damn, that's pretty good, and not a bad option for my dub for now (until I sell it), but since the piping runs out of the back instead of the sides, I don't think it will work.
Good for you though!
Good for you though!
is there an equivalent model for the viggen? im having a hard time finding the part from online parts dealers. will any saab dealership have it or be able to order based on part no. 4729521?
ok it seems to be the saab 9-3 viggen, which is a special edition 9-3 based on the saab 37 viggen aircraft..

Well the straight out endtanks dont work... The core isn't wide enough... Thats why i'll be hitting up the Hardware store and getting 2 of these:

And some tubes of this:

Any SAAB Dealer should have the i/c or be able to get it...
Another thing that I was thinking of doing was beading the ends of the pipes with JB Weld to get a "Lip" on the end of the pipes instead of just using the welder... seems easier to use JB Weld and it should hold just as well...

In my experience the best way to weld plastic is to use one of the two part kits which include a powder and a liquid. They chemically bond to hard plastics, so you're not just getting a mechanical bond. The bond is very strong. Usually when stressed to the breaking point, the plastic will break away from the repair area. Its that strong.
Ok, sorry for sounding like an infomercial, I'm not plugging any particular product. There are three or four brands out there like this. Just trying to spread some of my experiences. Also, these will not bond with polyethelene and some other soft plastics. Heat is the only way to really repair those. I've tested loads of different plastic repair products for my boss, which is the onlly reason I'm saying anything at all.
Btw, great work finding a cheap intercooler source. I might have to pick one up later!

wow that looks damn sweet. never heard of the viggen before but then i don't know **** about saab's. perhaps you have found the next HT cheap IC of choice. better grab one for myself before the saab dealers realize and raise the price
hey man do u have any pics of where the piping ends up right now? i wanna get an idea of how they fit. or get some pics of how it sits right now with the bumper off when you go back to do the piping

It has plastic end tanks.
how do you weld plastic? there is a method, but it sucks. JB weld is just rigging stuff. Why not do it right, and get a tyrus IC that'll actually fit the car, and not require any work with the plastic? His only go for around ~200$....

mos... any more info on what this substance is, and where I can buy it?
As far as the Tyrus i/c's i didnt know about them... Plus I like being different and customizing things...
As far as the plastic end tanks go, this i/c should be fine for upwards of 10+ Psi, which my car will probably never see anyways...

The original one was called 'Mat7' and it was from JDM land. I remember using it years ago. I think they sold out or went out of business or something. I guess they were too far ahead of their time. Now there are many similar products. Try the ninth one down if you're on a budget. The top one comes with more 'tools' tho. These aint as cheap as super glue, but they do work well.
BTW dont breathe the fumes from this stuff. It damages your kidneys. Ever notice how all the 'good stuff' is really bad?
Back to the topic! This Saaaaaaaab intercooler rocks!

looks really clean so far. its cool to see someone who takes their time and gets it done right the first time, while still going the cheaper/creative route.
BTW, anymore exterior pics of the car?
